Ben Shelton and Jannik Sinner will clash in the quarter-final of the 2026 Australian Open, marking their tenth career meeting when they take on court Wednesday (28 January).

The two tennis stars have contested three Grand Slam matches previously, including a semi-final bout in last year's tournament.

Shelton is looking to reach the last four for the second year in a row - the third across all slams in his career so far. The 23-year-old North American is in the hunt for his first major title but must overcome the defending champion to keep that dream alive.

Sinner, meanwhile, is aiming to complete a ‘three-peat’ Down Under, having won the title in both 2024 and 2025. The 24-year-old Italian reached the final of all four Grand Slams last year and will be looking to emulate that form on the court this time around beginning with the AO.

Wednesday’s quarter-final clash will be the tenth meeting between these top eight players, their first match dating back to 2023. It was the first, and only, win that Shelton has registered over Sinner to date.

Since then, the Italian has gone on to record eight consecutive wins over the U.S. star, all of which coming in straight sets.

He has beaten his upcoming opponent in three Grand Slam contests, twice at Wimbledon and once in the Australian Open.

While the numbers heavily favour Sinner, in eight of the nine existing meetings at least one set in each has been decided by a tiebreaker, Shelton pushing the world No. 2 to raise his game.
