Marcus Rashford makes confession about previous Barcelona transfer talks over Man Utd exit

Marcus Rashford has revealed that he previously held talks over a move to Barcelona, but they didn’t come to fruition until this year, when he joined the La Liga champions on loan.

After graduating from the academy and briefly becoming a star player at Manchester United, Marcus Rashford lost his way and found himself sidelined under Ruben Amorim.

This inevitably led to Rashford leaving United last January for a temporary spell at Aston Villa. He returned in the summer before signing a season-long loan at Barcelona.

Rashford was unstoppable in Barcelona’s 6-1 win over Olympiacos in the Champions League this week, so he’s doing everything he can to impress in an attempt to secure a permanent move at the end of the season.

There doesn’t seem to be any way back for Rashford at Old Trafford, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be looking to get the best possible deal from Barcelona if they decide they want to keep the England international beyond this season.

Marcus Rashford had an opportunity to join Barcelona in the past

Rashford has revealed that his summer deal with Barcelona was not the first time he has spoken to the Catalan club about the prospect of joining them.

Now, it has become a real possibility as he impresses as a United loanee by becoming one of Barcelona’s most prolific players this season, with five goals and six assists. Four of those goals have come in the Champions League.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN, Rashford has revealed that he is benefiting from “a new environment” after ending his long association with United in the summer.

“It was so many years in one place,” Rashford said.

“People forget this, but 24 years, 23 years of my life was with Manchester United. So sometimes you just need a change. I think maybe this is the case with me and yeah, I’m enjoying everything.”

Ahead of his first El Clasico meeting against Real Madrid, Rashford revealed it might have happened sooner had he left Old Trafford earlier.

“I just believe that things happen when they’re supposed to happen,” Rashford said.

“It’s not the first time I spoke with Barcelona about potentially coming here, but for whatever reasons it didn’t happen in the past and now is my opportunity to make it happen.

“I feel like there’s no time like the present now. So I just take things day to day.

“The key thing for me is just to continue to improve because when you retire, you’re going to miss everything — the good stuff, the bad stuff — you’re going to miss it about the sport.

“Every day I just take it day by day and just try to improve from the day before.”

Marcus Rashford desperate to stay at Barcelona

Rashford has made it no secret that he desires to remain at Barcelona next season.

The United loanee is doing everything he can to make that a reality.

He describes it as an ‘honour’ to play for Barcelona.

“Oh yeah, for sure,” he said.

“I’m enjoying this football club and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game. For a player it is an honour.”
