Gael Monfils is set to retire at the end of the 2026 ATP season, bringing an end to a remarkable career.

The Frenchman reached a career-high of sixth in the world during arguably the toughest era in tennis history, competing with the ‘big four’ of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

Monfils also reached two Grand Slam semifinals, making the final four at the 2008 French Open as well as the 2016 US Open.

Now, with retirement on the horizon, the 39-year-old has revealed what he plans to do after putting down the racket.

Gael Monfils discusses his plans after retiring from tennis

Speaking on Silver State Sports & Entertainment Network, Monfils said: “Of course, you know, I think about what I’m going to do a bit next.

“Of course, I wanted to give back to tennis because tennis gave me a lot. But my next chapter is, I want to work in finance.

“So I’m actually learning to work in finance next year. That’s my main goal. That’s going to be chapter number two for me.

“And then, as I just told you, of course, when I have the chance also to give back a little bit for tennis, you know, I will because tennis gave me everything.

“So that’s for sure that tennis will always be number one in my heart. So I don’t know yet exactly what I’m going to do for tennis, but I want to work in finance.”

Gael Monfils says he has done some internships to prepare for career in finance

Asked if he will have to go back to school to prepare for a career in finance, Monfils said: “Yeah, I mean, actually, I’ve done some internships when I was a little bit hurt and couldn’t practice a full day.

“Then, of course, now it’s a little bit easier. And sometimes you can do online schooling.

“And then, of course, I try to, you know, when I have downtime with tennis, try to educate myself with finance.”

Monfils has played in three tournaments so far during his farewell season on the ATP Tour.

He crashed out in the first round of both the ASB Classic and the Australian Open before picking up his first win of 2026 at the Mexican Open recently.
