US Open 2025: Carlos Alcaraz returns to the top with dominant performance against Jannik Sinner

2025 US Open men's singles final – Alcaraz clinches title in fourth set

17:31 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6 Alcaraz - game, set, match Alcaraz

Alcaraz sets up two championship points, yet in both instances, Sinner fights to produce two winners and keep the contest alive. That pushes the Spaniard to an unstoppable net volley to set up match point No.3.

The 22-year-old lines up his serve, and for the 10th time this match, it is an ace. What a way to win his sixth Grand Slam title and second victory at Flushing Meadows, greeted by a joyful roar at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Your 2025 US Open men's singles champion - and new world No.1 - is Carlos Alcaraz!

17:25 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 4-5 Alcaraz

So Sinner manages to hold after being a point away from being brought to deuce, and after this changeover, Alcaraz will serve for the title. One more game for the Spaniard to be crowned a six-time major champion - stay tuned.

17:21 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 3-5 Alcaraz

Yet another solid service game from Alcaraz, and if he can break Sinner for the sixth time, he will be the US Open champion.

17:17 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 3-4 Alcaraz

Alcaraz holds serve from his break in a set where he has been finding the points at the right time. The pressure is always on Sinner to deliver on his service, something he did near flawlessly in the Wimbledon final but has fluctuated at Flushing Meadows.

Nonetheless, the defending champion holds on and stays within touching distance, but he needs to counteract the Spaniard's serve - he has only created one break point all match, which he capitalised on.

17:10 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 2-3 Alcaraz

No breaks so far in what is the most even set so far in the men's singles final - and what about that for a point for 15-15! Another Sinner dropshot is returned by Alcaraz, allowing the Italian to deftly guide it along the net and out of reach.

Just as we are going smoothly, Sinner commits a fourth double fault of the match to set up an Alcaraz break point. A third serve in a row is no good, and though his second serve is in, a subsequent long forehand allows the world No.2 to break in a huge moment!

16:56 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 1-1 Alcaraz

Steph Curry cannot believe what he has seen with his arms to his head, and nor can most people watching this match. Alcaraz seals the game with a superb winner down the line, which he created only by fighting to keep up with Sinner.

16:55 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 Alcaraz

Given the drama of this final, we have not had the chance to update the Olympian roll-call inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. In the stands are Pep Guardiola, Olympic football gold medallist at Barcelona 1992, and Martina Navratilova, the 18-time Grand Slam singles champion and Olympian from Athens 2004.

16:52 (EDT, GMT-4) - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 Alcaraz

The set changeover surely brings vital respite for Sinner, who needs to react and respond as soon as possible. He can do that with the opening serve, but his sweeping forehand goes wide to gift a break point for Alcaraz - Sinner saves it.

On the second break point, Sinner pulls of an audacious slice that Alcaraz somehow gets to, but the Italian finishes the point off to a standing ovation at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

This opening game of the fourth set is not being given up easily by either player, who produce four deuces to cancel out each other's brilliance. At last, Alcaraz cracks and overdoes a forehand as Sinner holds...14 minutes later!

2025 US Open men's singles final – Alcaraz enters new realm in devastating third set

16:39 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 1-6 Alcaraz - game, set Alcaraz

Sinner avoids the bagel (6-0 set), and now Alcaraz looks to secure a baguette (6-1)...a 130mph (209kmh) serve is setting the tone, though the Italian is forcing the Spaniard deep and into some errors.

But it is a Sinner unforced error at 30-15 that looks to be costly, and it is set point Alcaraz. His serve is too much for Sinner, who can barely get behind the ball as the second seed romps to a brutal third set!

16:32 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 0-5 Alcaraz

Make that five consecutive games for Alcaraz, what drama at Arthur Ashe Stadium! Four aces, nine winners and a triple break away from taking the third set...

16:29 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 0-4 Alcaraz

Alcaraz seemed a bit short of confidence in the second set, but he has come back in style with a double break of the world No.1 to storm into a 4-0 lead. Sinner is always a picture of composure, but he is up against the wall as the second seed seizes control of the final once more.

16:24 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 0-3 Alcaraz

The third game of the third set is the perfect example of the rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz: flawless, world-class tennis at the very highest level. A deft Alcaraz volley sees him hold and take a three-game lead, winning 83 per cent of points on first serve so far.

16:18 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 0-2 Alcaraz

Well, well, well...after an upsurge in his service in the second set, a forehand error from Sinner sees Alcaraz break him in ihs opening service game for the second time this match.

16:15 (EDT, GMT-4) - Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 0-1 Alcaraz

We are into the third set after a quick break, where Alcaraz is hungry and passionate as he looks to regain control and holds from the start.

The Spaniard misses out on the chance at history to become the first man in the Open Era to win the US Open without dropping a set. The late Neale Fraser remains the last player to do so, back when the tournament was known as the US Championships in 1960.

2025 US Open men's singles final - Sinner bites back to take second set

16:08 - Sinner 2-6, 6-3 Alcaraz - game, set Sinner

An Alcaraz holds hands the opportunity for the set over to Sinner, who hits a ruthless forehand winner for 15-0. A point apiece leads into an epic rally, 19 shots in total, which is finished off by a wonderful backhand volley at the net by the world No.1.

Well on the way to the set, Sinner forces an Alcaraz forehand error from the net to become the first man to win a set against the Spaniard at the 2025 US Open. We are a set apiece in the final!

16:00 - Sinner 2-6, 5-2 Alcaraz

That is a Sinner hold, and interestingly, the change in momentum has come from Alcaraz's drop-off on serve as much as a resurgence from the Italian. Alcaraz's first-serve percentage is identical at 83 per cent, yet Sinner's is up by six per cent.

Can the world No.1 break for the set?

15:56 - Sinner 2-6, 4-2 Alcaraz

Since that Sinner break at 3-1, both men have held serve and found their consistency on court. Alcaraz appears frustrated with himself as his Italian opponent looks to dictate play on his serve, something that has improved this set.

15:45 - Sinner 2-6, 3-1 Alcaraz

With the world No.2 serving so well, it is vital for Sinner to respond with consistency in his service game. There is a 10 per cent increase on his points won on first serve from the first to second set.

Just as we talk about Alcaraz's formidable serve, top seed Sinner produces a stunning return game to break the Spaniard to love! The 24-year-old converts the break point at its first emergence in this final.

15:37 - Sinner 2-6, 1-1 Alcaraz

Now Alcaraz responds with a hold, and his service has been absolutely clinical. So far his numbers read 87 per cent of points won on first serve, and an even better 88 per cent on his second serve.

15:33 (EDT, GMT-4) - Sinner 2-6, 1-0 Alcaraz

Sinner gets the second set underway and in a nervy fashion, almost conceding another break. The world No.1 stays cool, composed and holds in seven minutes, and that feels like an important moment.

2025 US Open men's singles final - Alcaraz clinches clinical first set at Arthur Ashe Stadium

15:26 - Sinner 2-6 Alcaraz - game, set Alcaraz

Serving for the set following the changeover, Alcaraz is drawing Sinner into exactly the sort of positions he wants. That in turn is drawing errors at the net from the world No.1, including at the key moment on the serve return that seals the opening set for Alcaraz!

15:23 - Sinner 2-5 Alcaraz

Alcaraz holds, and despite Sinner's strong service, it is Alcaraz dominating affairs and forcing the Italian deep into his side and into errors. A break point at 15-40 is saved, but Sinner fails to convert a drop shot at the net and is broken for the second time in the match.

It is the Spaniard who has the first sight of sealing the set...

15:15 - Sinner 2-3 Alcaraz

After Alcaraz holds again, he starts the fifth game with a deft sliced shot over the net that draws an audible approval from the Arthur Ashe crowd. Sinner keeps his cool, coming from 0-30 to hold serve going into the changeover.

15:06 - Sinner 1-2 Alcaraz

Who are the Olympians in attendance at today's final? Three-time Olympic alpine skiing medallist Lindsey Vonn is in Sinner's box, the American a big tennis fan who regularly interacts with players on social media.

Team USA basketball star Stephen 'Steph' Curry is also in attendance, the Golden State Warriors point guard who won his first Olympic gold medal at Paris 2024.

Given this is New York, there are surely more around - we will keep our eyes peeled...

15:02 - Sinner 0-2 Alcaraz

That is an impressive service game from Alcaraz, dropping just one point and sealing it with a trademark sweeping drop shot. Sinner is back on serve and is back to his offensive tactics to try to keep up in the early stages.

14:57 (EDT, GMT-4) - Sinner 0-1 Alcaraz

Sinner gets the men's singles final underway and he goes aggressive in his serve-and-volley play, first forcing an error from Alcaraz followed by a forehand winner. The Spaniard works his way back to 30-40 to set up a break point, which Sinner saves with a brutal ace.

A captivating 13-shot rally is brought to an end when Alcaraz hits his return long, but his shot-making is extending this opening game point by point. The second seed creates a second break point, and another unforced error from Sinner sees Alcaraz get on the scoreboard first!

That first game lasted eight minutes - a reminder that their longest match, the 2025 Roland-Garros final, lasted five hours and 29 minutes.
