Mumbai Indians faced the heat from batting legend Sunil Gavaskar after sloppiness in the field cost them four runs during an IPL 2025 match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Saturday evening. GT consigned MI to their second defeat of the ongoing season with the five-time champions slipping to the bottom of the standings.

During the fifth over, Deepak Chahar fired a short delivery at GT batter Sai Sudharsan who dragged it to deep square leg region before ambling off to the non-striker’s end for a single. With Sudharsan jogging, Naman Dhir, the fielder, thought there’s a chance for a run out and aimed for a direct hit from the deep.

The throw missed it mark and unfortunately, there was nobody to backing up. A desperate dive from captain Hardik Pandya proved futile as the ball raced away for four overthrows.

Chahar was clearly unhappy with the turn of events.

“That’s absolutely terrible cricket. No wonder Deepak Chahar is not amused because it has (the five runs) gone down against his name!" Gavaskar said on air.

Gavaskar’s fellow commentator Eoin Morgan called it ‘sloppy stuff’.

Pandya later criticised his fielders during the post-match presentation, blaming them for costing MI 20-25 extra runs.

“We were not professional in the field. We made basic errors and that cost us 20-25 runs and in a T20 game that is quite a lot," Pandya said.

GT were put in to bat first and a half-century from Sudharsan helped them to a challenging total of 196/8 in 20 overs. In reply, MI were restricted to 160/6 as the hosts recorded a 36-run win to open their account.

Pandya lauded the effort put in by GT batters.

“They (GT) were quite exceptional, they didn’t take many chances, they did the right stuff, they were able to get runs without playing many risky shots. We were doing catch-up since then. At the moment we all need to take responsibility, it’s still early stages. Batters have to come to the party, hopefully they do that soon," he said.

MI will next face defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium and hope to end their winless start at home.
