Hundreds of people have attended a football tournament to honour a 13-year-old girl who died after getting into difficulty in the North Sea.

Edie Smart, from Monkseaton, North Tyneside, died in hospital on 28 July, four days after being pulled from the water at Whitley Bay beach.

Her brother, Jamie Scott, said football was "one of her favourite things to do" as the charity tournament brought together Whitley Bay Football Club - who Edie played for - and their friendly rivals Whitley Bay Sporting Club.

Edie's family said about £30,000 had so far been raised for the RNLI and the Great North Air Ambulance, who were both involved in trying to rescue Edie.

Edie's brother, Jamie Scott, said: "I've got very fond memories of playing football with Edie in the garden when she was a toddler.

"It was one of her favourite things to do," he added.

One of those playing in the tournament, Lana, said: "She was my best friend... just the sweetest person ever.

"If I was down and if she was even just standing in front of me - her face would make me light up... that's the person she was."

Another friend, Tiffany, said: "She was always smiling and everyone loved her."
