Micah Richards baffled by Man Utd star who could have done 'better' vs Tottenham in Europa League final, it was 'too easy'

Micah Richards singled out one Manchester United star under Ruben Amorim after the Red Devils lost to Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final in Spain.

Tottenham crushed Manchester United’s Europa League dreams and Spurs sealed the UEFA trophy with a 1-0 win on the night at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao.

United struggled to break down Tottenham after going 1-0 down in the first half and Ruben Amorim’s men left chasing the Europa League final tie in the second half.

Brennan Johnson put Tottenham 1-0 up against United in the 42nd minute and the 24-year-old Wales forward’s first-half opener proved to be the eventual winner.

United’s defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final means that the Red Devils will be without any European football for the 2025-26 campaign at Old Trafford.

Amorim also fell short of lifting his first piece of major silverware as United manager after he left Sporting CP in 2024 and replaced Erik ten Hag at the Red Devils.

United have endured a disastrous 2024-25 season and the Red Devils are 16th in the Premier League table and are only one point clear of 17th-place Tottenham.

Micah Richards raises major question marks around Harry Maguire’s role in Man Utd’s 2025 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham

Brennan Johnson produced a scrappy finish for Tottenham’s winner over Manchester United in the Europa League final after Pape Matar Sarr picked him out with a cross.

Luke Shaw was met with blame for not preventing Johnson from scoring and Andre Onana desperately failed in his bid to scramble the ball off the line in the United net.

Roy Keane was critical of Harry Maguire for getting himself into a battle with Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke rather than focusing on Johnson at the time.

Joining Roy Keane in the CBS Sports studio for the Europa League coverage, Micah Richards admitted that Harry Maguire could have done a “little bit better” in his role.

“You talk about people’s body positions, you talk about being very aggressive, so, actually, they’re in decent positions,” he said, as per the Metro.

“When you play wing-back [on] this side, the whole point of playing wing-back in this system is so you can engage, but no one engages.

“It’s too easy and then can Maguire [do] a little bit better there also?”

Ruben Amorim’s eye-opening assessment of Man Utd’s 2025 Europa League final performance vs Tottenham in Bilbao

United manager Amorim felt that the Red Devils were much better in the second half against Tottenham and ‘pushed’ Spurs at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao.

“The first half was a little bit tense,” he said after the match, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“Possession for both teams was not long, we couldn’t keep the ball for so long, Tottenham were the same. A lot of second balls.

“But in the second half, we push, we push the opponent to near the box, we tried to cross, to create situations.

“In the end, they defend the goal they scored in the first half. In the second half, we tried everything but in the end it was not enough.”

United will return to England without the Europa League trophy after their defeat in Spain and are now set to host Aston Villa in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
