No. 27 seed Togami Shunsuke of Japan upset compatriot Harimoto Tomokazu, the world’s fourth-ranked men’s table tennis player, 4–1 on Wednesday (21 May) at the 2025 ITTF World Championships Finals in Doha, Qatar.

That match marked the only major upset of the day in men’s singles, as top-15 seeds Lin Shidong of the People’s Republic of China, Olympic silver medallist Truls Moregard of Sweden, Patrick Franziska of Germany, Hugo Calderano of Brazil, and Lin Yun-Ju of Chinese Taipei all punched their tickets to the round of 16.

It was a welcome respite from the chaos of the opening days of competition in Doha, which saw the shock exit of 10th seed Dang Qiu of Germany, the former European champion, and the withdrawal of Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist Alexis Lebrun, seeded ninth in Doha, as he focuses on doubles with brother Félix while still recovering from a fractured hand.

The brothers advanced after recording a 3–1 win over Sweden’s Anton Källberg and Moregard, and Félix Lebrun is safely through to the round of 16 after a 4–2 triumph over the Republic of Korea’s Oh Junsung on Tuesday (20 May).
