Harry Maguire's future with Manchester United remains an uncertain situation

Harry Maguire has been playing some of the best football of his Manchester United career while an uncertain future hangs over his head. The centre-back is out of contract at the end of the season and a deal to extend his seven-year stay at the Theatre of Dreams has not yet materialised.

Reportedly eager to continue his stay in Manchester, the England ace has fought his way back into the first-team under interim boss Michael Carrick, suffering just one defeat in his last eight starts in the Premier League.

With less than three months of the season left to play as United fight to qualify for the Champions League, Mirror Football delves into the latest updates of Maguire's contract situation, the verdict from his team-mates and possible transfers abroad.

Contract stance

In his seventh season at Old Trafford, Maguire's career in Manchester looked dead and buried a mere two months ago, with just four league starts to his name under Ruben Amorim. However, the arrival of Carrick breathed new life into the England international, who has played a pivotal role in United's rise up the Premier League table.

While a decision has yet to be made on whether Maguire, 33, will be offered a new contract, The i Paper report a proposed deal on lesser wages is being considered, with the defender having to reduce his £190,000-a-week to around £100,000. The report adds that Maguire is said to be willing to consider the new terms.

Dressing room verdict

As the third-longest serving United player in the current squad and former captain, he holds quite the standing among his team, who are said to want the club to award the defender with a new contract.

A source told The Sun that the consensus is it would be "madness" if the Englishman didn't continue his career in Manchester because of his form and the help he's given to the club's younger players. The source said: "The players think it would be madness if he was not offered a new deal.

"Harry has endured plenty of ups and downs at United but has come through all that and is playing really well. He’s very well-respected in the dressing room and is passing on a lot of knowledge to some of the younger players like Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro. Everyone likes him and respects him and the majority of the players want the club to give him a deal."

Transfer offers abroad

Having spent the entirety of his 15-year senior career in England, a move abroad could be an appealing adventure for Maguire and one potentially on the cards due to his precarious contract situation with United.

Given the expiry of his deal in the summer, Maguire is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs and according to The Athletic, the defender's agent has held talks with clubs in Turkey and Italy.

They have not yet moved beyond enquiries and while it remains to be seen whether the 33-year-old would even entertain a move abroad, it looks as if Maguire will have plenty of options upon deciding the next step of his career.
