Former Australian captain Aaron Finch advises Kolkata Knight Riders to reconsider Venkatesh Iyer's hefty Rs 23.75 crore retention. Finch believes Iyer's current middle-order role, without bowling, doesn't justify the price, despite past match-winning performances. He suggests releasing Iyer to free up funds and potentially reacquiring him at a more balanced cost.

Former Australian cricket captain Aaron Finch has advised Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to reconsider retaining all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer due to his high price tag and inconsistent role in the team ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League season, with official retention lists set to be announced on Saturday. KKR has not yet disclosed their retention plans for the new season.

"Paying Rs 23.75 crore is too high for a player like Venkatesh Iyer, who has been used out of position as a middle-order batter without utilising his bowling," Finch said while analyzing the team's possible moves as an expert. "While Venkatesh Iyer has been a match-winner for KKR, being their top scorer in 2021 and helping them lift the trophy in 2024, his inconsistent role and high price tag don't align," Finch explained on JioStar. Iyer made a strong debut in 2021, scoring 370 runs in ten games and helping KKR reach the final, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings. He maintained his form in 2024, scoring 370 runs as KKR won the title. However, his performance declined in 2025, managing only 142 runs in 11 games with one fifty at an average of 20.28. "KKR should consider releasing him to free up funds and potentially buy him back at a more reasonable price that matches his current role in the team," Finch added. The franchise's decision on Iyer, one of their most impactful yet unpredictable performers, will be revealed when the retention deadline arrives. The team management faces a crucial decision regarding the retention of the all-rounder, considering his past contributions and current form.
