Samson delivered another headline-making performance during the 2026 T20 World Cup semifinal against England at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, scoring 89 runs off 42 balls to help India post a strong total while setting multiple records in the process. The explosive knock came just days after another impressive inning earlier in the tournament. Here’s what you need to know.

1. Sanju Samson Delivered a Record-Breaking T20 World Cup Semifinal Performance

Samson played one of the most memorable innings of the 2026 tournament during India’s semifinal matchup against England.

Samson scored 89 runs off 42 balls, smashing eight fours and seven sixes with a strike rate of 211.90, according to Cricket Country. The aggressive innings helped India build a powerful total in the high-pressure knockout game.

The performance came after Samson received an early break. England bowler Jofra Archer forced a chance when Samson was on 15 runs, but Harry Brook dropped the catch. Samson capitalized on the mistake and quickly shifted the momentum of the match.

With seven sixes during the inning, Samson set a new mark for the most sixes by an Indian batter in a T20 World Cup knockout game. The record previously belonged to Yuvraj Singh, who hit five sixes against Australia in the 2007 semifinal.

Samson’s score also matched another major record. His 89 runs equaled the highest individual score by an Indian player in a T20 World Cup knockout match, tying Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 89 against West Indies in the 2016 semifinal.

2. The Indian Cricketer Broke Multiple Records During the 2026 Tournament

Samson’s semifinal performance added to a remarkable run throughout the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Earlier in the tournament, Samson scored an unbeaten 97 against West Indies, marking his second consecutive fifty-plus score. Across just three matches, Samson blasted 16 sixes.

That total broke the previous record for most sixes by an Indian player in a single T20 World Cup edition. Rohit Sharma previously held the mark with 15 sixes during the 2024 tournament.

Samson’s powerful batting has been a defining storyline of India’s run to the final.

Remesh holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and later earned a Master’s degree in Human Resources from Loyola College of Social Sciences. She works as an entrepreneur and HR professional.
