‘Highly likely’: Hollywood pair’s famous football fairytale side set for blockbuster Aussie game

English football fairytale side Wrexham, owned by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny, is “highly likely” to play in Australia later this year.

Nine’s Tom Morris reported the Welsh side made famous by their ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series is set to play a game against A-League side Melbourne Victory.

The clash would take place at Marvel Stadium, and is remarkable given the club is still only in the third tier of English football.

“Wrexham, the club that’s been made famous by Ryan Reynolds and a three series documentary overseas, Wrexham is highly likely to be playing a game in July against Melbourne Victory at Marvel Stadium,” Morris said on Nine News.

“It’s an amazing coup for Visit Victoria. If they can get it done, and I expect they will, this is almost certainly happening.”

Wrexham sits second in League One, three points clear of Wycombe but with a game in hand, a place that would currently earn them promotion to the Championship.

That would put the side one division away from the Premier League.

McElhenney hinted at an Australian visit on a press tour earlier this year.

“Maybe we go on an international tour with a certain club to a certain continent?” he told Rolling Stone.

“Our third biggest… audience for Welcome to Wrexham is Australia. No. 1 US, No. 2 UK, No 3. is Australia, which I find fascinating.

“There is a lot of love for Wrexham. Who knows? Maybe we might bring the club to you instead of the other way around.”
