Many people thought that the 23 expulsions after the brawl in the final of the Campeonato Mineiro between Cruzeiro and Atlético-MG would represent a world record. But they don't.

The football match with the most red cards to date occurred in Argentina.

It was during Club Atlético Claypole's 2-0 victory over Victoriano Arenas, in the Primera D, equivalent to the Argentine fifth division in 2011.

All 36 players involved in the match (11 starters and seven substitutes from each team) were sent off.

The difference from the match between Cruzeiro and Galo is that in the Argentine duel, there were also expulsions during the game, due to fights between opponents (and even between teammates) while the match was ongoing.

At Mineirão, all players were expelled after the final whistle.
