The wait is almost over. The Premier League finally returns this Friday. It's been a busy summer for the most valuable league in the world, with clubs in the English top-flight splashing out a combined €2.39 billion on transfers. Football fans cannot wait to see all the new stars in action in what promises to be an enthralling campaign. Can Liverpool retain their title after a busy summer? Can Erling Haaland wrestle back the Golden Boot from Mohamed Salah? Can the promoted teams survive relegation this time around?

Our writers here at Transfermarkt have opened themselves up to look like utter fools in around nine months time by giving their predictions ahead of the new season. They have tried their hand at guessing which team will be champions, who will make the top four, which three teams will be relegated, which side will be the surprise package, who will be the league's top scorer, and who will prove to be the best summer signing. So without further ado, let's take a look at their predictions.

I think it's a hard title race to call. Whilst Liverpool are most people's favourites, I think losing Trent Alexander-Arnold, as well as their two best players in Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah getting older, could catch up with them. I have gone for Arsenal to pip them to the title because I feel they have the most stable squad, but think they will also need to sign a new left-winger before deadline day. You can never count out Man City but another injury to Rodri has put me off. I think Man United could join those three teams in the top four - I like their summer business and they have no European football commitments. I think Everton could surprise a few people with David Moyes at the helm and some smart signings made including Jack Grealish. It's hard to look past Haaland being top goalscorer, whilst I think Martín Zubimendi is going to show why he was wanted by so many top teams.

I expect Everton to enjoy their inaugural season in their new stadium, with the club making smart signings to back up the ever-impressive David Moyes. While a number of mid-table clubs have been victims to this transfer window, the Toffees have recruited well and should look very stable this season. The only thing that may take the shine off their surprise season is another league title for Liverpool. A lot of money has been spent in the English top-flight this summer, but there are few players as talented as Florian Wirtz in the Premier League and if he can perform even half as well for Arne Slot’s team as he has done in the Bundesliga for the last three seasons, he should set up plenty of goals for Mohamed Salah and help guide Liverpool through a crowded race for the top four.

It feels like Arsenal's time. They've addressed the weaknesses in their squad this summer and have the most balanced team. Moreover, Arsenal have the most valuable Premier League XI on Transfermarkt and six of their players feature in the most valuable XI. The top four almost picks itself but I expect Manchester United to push with no European football a major advantage - hence why I've included them as surprise package. Haaland guarantees goals, while City have potentially secured a bargain fee for Rayan Cherki.

Liverpool come off an incredible title-winning season and have had perhaps the best transfer window of any club in Europe. Adding Wirtz on its own was an incredible get. But Liverpool didn't stop there. They also signed Hugo Ekitiké from Frankfurt, and brought in Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen. That's not it. Milos Kerkez arrives from Bournemouth, and goalkeeper Giorgi Marmadashvili from Valencia. The only weakness I see at the moment is the backline. If Virgil van Dijk goes down, the club could be in trouble. The top four are pretty much as per usual. Chelsea and Man City are two teams to watch. My surprise package is Tottenham. Thomas Frank is one of the most fascinating coaches in European football. Haaland is Haaland. What else can I say? Although, I would keep an eye on Cole Palmer. Wirtz was perhaps the most in-demand player this summer. Beating out European competition speaks for Liverpool and Arne Slot.

Liverpool might feel that the best form of defence is attack by signing Wirtz, Ekitiké and potentially Alexander Isak. But history tells us different; the teams that win the title are usually tough to break down, and that's Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has improved his squad options by signing Zubimendi, Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyökeres. They will be clear ahead of the likes of Man City and Chelsea. I still firmly expect Wirtz to deliver double digits for goals and assists, while Gyökeres will only need a short while to get firing. Leeds and Wolves haven't spent nearly enough to stay up, while Burnley's business has been strange, to say the least. Everton, armed with Grealish and Thierno Barry, will raise a few eyebrows under the perennially-underrated Moyes.
