Mirra Andreeva loses the plot in Indian Wells defeat, latest tennis news

The defending champion lost complete control of her emotions as she punched herself and threw her racquet on multiple occasions in a total capitulation.

“Andreeva really getting upset with herself here. Don’t like seeing that. At least she’s doing it with her fist this time and not her racket, but don’t want to see that. Did that in Dubai as well,” commentator John Horn noted during the match.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the 18-year-old then turned on the crowd after losing the match, gesturing and shouting “f*** you”.

The ordeal saw the Russian booed off court, as a stunned spectator could be seen mouthing ‘oh my God’, taken aback by her behaviour.

Andreeva’s gestures after the match were not her first outburst either.

She threw her racket after losing the second set tiebreaker before smashing it, resulting in a code violation.

Andreeva briefly regrouped to break Siniakova and take a 3-2 lead in the third, but Siniakova won the next four games, saving two break points in the final game to then take the match in three sets.

Speaking after the clash Andreeva said she wasn’t proud of her behaviour on court and needs to get better at handling her emotions.

“I´m not really proud of how I managed it. I´m not really proud of how I handled it in the end,” Andreeva said.

“It was to myself, to everyone, basically. I mean, after the loss, I just get very angry, so I say those things sometimes to myself.

“I mean, first to myself, of course, but then, yeah, it was just anger coming out, just a lot of emotions. Not really towards anyone.

“Those are the things that (I) really need to work on soon.

“I don’t know. Not in the future, but whenever I get the chance. Yeah, I hope that I can work on it and I get better in that, as well.”

Siniakova will face Elina Svitolina for a place in the quarter-finals after the ninth-seeded Ukrainian beat Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 6-2.
