Top African Leagues That Drive the Most Bets

Football is popular in Africa across many different countries. As it’s such a large continent, it’s unsurprising to find that there are a variety of top leagues to enjoy. Some of these are bigger and better than others though, and tend to attract the larger followings and subsequently the bigger bets. And, when it comes to sports betting in Africa, players are always looking for the places that they can get the best value for money, as well as the widest betting markets. So, let’s take a look at the top African leagues and what makes them stand out from the rest.

Egyptian Premier League

First up, the Egyptian Premier League is arguably the biggest of them all. A lot of this has to do with its strong and lengthy history within the sport. Not only that, but it has huge financial backing, which makes it an obvious frontrunner when it comes to being known outside of the continent. Importantly, it also has some major football clubs within the league, for instance, the likes of Zamalek and Al Ahly, both of which draw international coaches and have top players on their side. Al Ahly, for example, is actually the wealthiest club in Africa and one of the top richest outside of Europe and SOuth America. Impressively, the league has won 19 CAF trophies which is the most of any league on the content.

Moroccan Botola Pro

Another top league is Botola Pro from Morocco, sitting in second just after Egypt. Like Egypt, the North African country has a lot of solid clubs in place, many of which tend to lead in their leagues. Players from clubs like Wydad Casablanca and Raja Casablanca are often part of the international team and ensure success in all CAF competitions. In fact, it’s these two clubs which really put the league on the map. Both teams have won the CAF Champions League multiple times.

South African Premier Soccer League

Also known as the PSL, South Africa’s Premier Soccer League is one of the most well-funded within the sport. Winning the league means the team takes home an impressive $1.1 million, making this the richest league on the continent. It’s got some of the best facilities out of all leagues, great sponsorship deals and of course, plenty of top teams. Clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns are typically one of the top in the league, with major players on the team. All of this helps to make the South African PSL the strongest in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1

Surprisingly high on the list is Algeria. The country employs a very solid talent development programme, which means that there are many new players supported and grown over the years. This means that both their clubs, like ES Setif and CR Belouizdad and national team benefit a lot, with solid performances across tournaments. The Algerian league is primarily sponsored by the government and various other sponsorships, so it’s not quite as wealthy as others, but because of some high-profile stars like Riyad Mahrez, and Islam Slimani, continues to stamp a name on the world of football.

Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1

Finally, similar to Algeria, the Tunisian league is also very strong. It has massive clubs like Esperance de Tunis and Etoile du Sahel, both of which are always contenders in CAF tournaments. In fact, Esperance typically wins outside of this league and have won the CAF Champions league four times, usually placing in the top five on a regular basis. As such, Tunisia has a strong showing at CAF games. Other solid areas of interest is this rivalry between Etoile du Sahel and Club Africain which provides a rich, yet positive rivalry within the league.

There’s a lot on offer when it comes to Africa’s football. While these are the top leagues other options abound too. Tanzania’s Premier League, the Angolan Girabola, DR Congo Linafoot and the Nigeria Professional Football League all offer something else to watch, along with massive fanbases.
