Ben White goes from hero to villain as England auditions fall flat in Uruguay draw - 6 talking points

ENGLAND 1-1 URUGUAY: Thomas Tuchel named a much-changed Three Lions XI at Wembley on Friday evening with the South American nation scoring a late equaliser from the penalty spot

Ben White had a dramatic 20 minutes upon his England return as the Three Lions were pegged back by Uruguay at Wembley.

The Arsenal defender was recalled into the Three Lions' squad earlier this week and came off the bench to find the net in the closing stages.

His goal was one of rare flashpoints at Wembley, as a disjointed England side struggling to hit their stride.

Uruguay were given a golden chance to equalise in stoppage time after a VAR review saw a penalty awarded for a foul by White. Federico Valverde stepped up and scored to see the game level.

Here are all of the talking points from Wembley Stadium:

Madueke taken off

The first-half was very much a non-event. The only incidents saw both sides sustain an injury issue.

Joaquín Piquerez was stretchered off for the South American side after sustaining an ankle issue.

Tuchel was then given his own concern, with Noni Madueke forced off. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will be keeping a close eye on the winger and will certainly be hoping that he's not picked up a serious problem.

Rashford makes an impression

England supporters have not seen much from Rashford this season in person. He has previously played for Barcelona against Newcastle in the Champions League.

But the on-loan Manchester United man was in fine form at Wembley. He was the Three Lions' main threat against Uruguay as he showed tenacity and skill down the left flank.

Rashford will certainly hope that he can produce a few more displays like that as he attempts to seal a spot in England's World Cup squad.

Tuchel left furious

Manchester City star Phil Foden was on the end of a crunching challenge from Ronald Araujo during the second-half and it was a clash that left England boss Tuchel incensed.

The Barcelona star crunched in on the winger, taking him out at the ankle. Neither the referee not VAR elected the challenge was enough for any further punishment but Araujo might have felt himself lucky to have not been sent off.

England struggle for fluency

Given the unfamiliar make-up of the England side, it will not be a surprise to learn that the Three Lions struggled in attack against Uruguay.

There was a real lack of fluency in the England front-line, with chances at a premium throughout the game. Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the best chance of the game but could only plant his effort off-target from only a few yards out.

White marks return with a goal

Arsenal defender Ben White was an intriguing name added to the England squad earlier this week. He was called up after Jarell Quansah was forced out through injury.

Having last been in an England squad during the 2022 World Cup, White came on for the final few moments and marked his return in perfect fashion with a goal. He stabbed home at the far post from only a yard out.

Like White's introduction, his goal was greeted by a few boos from the home support. It seems White still has work to do to get fans back onside.

Ugarte confusion

Uruguay were left furious after White's goal was meant to stand, with it being thought that a foul had taken place beforehand. The strike eventually stood.

But in the aftermath, Man United star Manuel Ugarte was booked - for what was his second caution of the game. But bizarrely, the referee chose not to brandish a red.

The official line is that the first yellow was actually rescinded.
