Chennai Super Kings’ list of retained and released players: MS Dhoni will play at least one more season with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ending weeks of uncertainty over his future in the league by including him in their list of retained players ahead of the mega auction. Besides Dhoni, who had led the ‘Yellow Army’ to five titles, CSK have also retained captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, senior left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, seam-bowling all-rounder Shivam Dube and Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana.

Skipper Gaikwad and Jadeja are CSK’s top retentions at Rs 18 crore while Pathirana and Dube have been retained at Rs 13 crore and Rs 12 crore respectively.

Dhoni, meanwhile, has been retained as an ‘uncapped’ player at Rs 4 crore, with the IPL having brought back an old retention rule that allowed veteran players who have been retired from international cricket for more than five years to be retained in the ‘uncapped’ category.

After winning the title for the fifth time in 2023, CSK had narrowly missed out on the playoffs in the 17th season earlier this year, Gaikwad’s first in charge, after suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of rivals Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their final league game.

CSK’s list of retained players: Ruturaj Gaikwad (Rs 18 crore, Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (Rs 13 crore), Shivam Dube (Rs 12 crore) and MS Dhoni (Rs 4 crore).

Which players CSK retained before IPL 2022 mega auction?

The trio of Dhoni, Jadeja and Gaikwad had been retained ahead of the 2022 mega auction as well, with the franchise also retaining English spin-bowling all-rounder Moeen Ali. Jadeja had been retained at the highest bracket of Rs 16 crore, with Dhoni at the second-highest bracket of Rs 12 crore.

Moeen, the only overseas player in the retention list, was put in the 8-crore bracket while Gaikwad, who had been on a run-scoring spree since making his debut in 2019, at Rs 6 crore.
