Tracking Tennessee’s possible QB options in the transfer portal

0
For the first time since the first couple of months of the Josh Heupel Era back in 2021, Tennessee is in the market for a transfer portal quarterback after the program’s messy public split with returning starter Nico Iamaleava. The 10-day spring window of the college football transfer portal opened on Wednesday, and the Vols are wading into the waters of trying to lure a proven, experienced quarterback, potentially as a plug-and-play starter or as competition for redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and freshman George MacIntyre (or both). The timing is a challenge at this point of the offseason with spring practices either ended or almost over across the country, but Tennessee has plenty to offer with Heupel saying the Vols are positioned to win this fall coming off a College Football Playoff berth, his track record of success at the position and some resources opening up with Iamaleava coming off the NIL books.

So who could Tennessee land? The Vols are in evaluation mode – they can’t pursue anyone in the SEC due to the league’s transfer deadline – and there surely is third-party activity going on behind the scenes as quarterbacks express interest and Tennessee assesses its options. But any real movement has to come when players are formally in the portal.

GoVols247 will keep tabs on Tennessee’s possible quarterback options in the portal with a tracker of who has entered (or signaled their intentions to do so), their 247Sports ranking and their stats from last season – we’re sticking with those who have been rated and ranked, save for some exceptions.

*** This story will be updated as more quarterbacks go into the portal. ***
