Vinod Kambli's health worsens: Tendulkar joins WhatsApp group raising support

Vinod Kambli continues to battle serious health concerns, with his recovery still incomplete despite signs of physical improvement. Amid this, Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has joined a WhatsApp group created by close friends to provide financial and emotional support.

The initiative, led by Kambli’s longtime friend Marcus Couto, has brought together several former cricketers and well-wishers. Speaking about the effort to Hindustan Times, Couto shed light on both the support system and Kambli’s current condition.

“I have formed a WhatsApp group including his friends, and without taking names, they contribute a lot financially,” Couto told Hindustan Times.

“His memory isn’t good, but over the last six months, it hasn’t declined either. He can’t remember much, but when something clicks, he does. Otherwise, it gets difficult for him,” he added.

Kambli’s condition remains delicate, with doctors warning of potential complications even as he shows gradual improvement in mobility. Couto revealed that while the former India batter has given up alcohol, other concerns persist.

“The doctor is saying that the next stage would be a brain stroke. He has stopped drinking, but sometimes when he goes down, he asks those passing by to help him with a smoke,” Couto said.

“He would ask auto drivers for a cigarette, and they would gladly oblige, thinking they’re helping ‘The Vinod Kambli’. But they don’t realise what harm they are causing. The damage is now not to his heart, liver or kidney; it’s his brain,” he added.

Despite these challenges, there have been positive signs. Kambli is now able to walk more comfortably and has even resumed light professional activity, recently shooting for an advertisement.

He spends most of his time at home with his family, occasionally visiting care centres in Thane, while regular medical check-ups remain a key part of his routine.

WHAT HAPPENED TO VINOD KAMBLI

Kambli’s health issues stem from a series of complications over the past few years.

A serious urinary infection required hospitalisation last year, and medical experts have since identified a blood clot in his brain that cannot be removed due to delayed treatment. This has left him at risk of a potential brain stroke.

While his physical condition has improved, his memory continues to be a concern, affecting daily routines such as medication and lifestyle discipline.

Support from the cricketing fraternity has been ongoing. In the past, legends like Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar had also extended help, highlighting the widespread concern for Kambli’s well-being.

For now, the focus remains on recovery and stability, with close friends and family playing a crucial role in helping him navigate this phase.
