What's going on with Calvin Ramsay at Liverpool after Hugo Ekitike takes his No. 22 shirt

Liverpool’s summer transfer window of 2022 has to go down as one of the most disappointing in the club’s history.

The Reds were coming off the back of one of the most dominant seasons ever seen in English football, going within a whisker of winning the quadruple.

Sadio Mane left on the back of the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, and Liverpool were felt to be playing catch-up for the rest of the summer.

While Luis Diaz had nominally replaced Mane the previous January, Darwin Nunez was brought in to add more firepower to the attack. Arriving for a record fee, Nunez never lived up to the hype.

Fabio Carvalho arrived from Fulham, but lasted only one full season with the Reds, while Arthur Melo played just 13 minutes for Liverpool after an emergency deadline day loan move from Juventus.

But if Nunez, Carvalho and Arthur were disappointing, then the signing of Calvin Ramsay has been a downright disaster. Three years on, and two first team appearances later, just what is going on with Ramsay?

When Liverpool signed Ramsay he was just turning 19 and was one of the most promising right-backs in British football.

Already a first team regular with Aberdeen, the defender looked all set to be Liverpool’s long-term replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But while that spot has opened up for Conor Bradley this summer, Ramsay is nowhere to be seen.

In fact, things got even more ominous for the Scotland international when new signing Hugo Ekitike took his No. 22 shirt earlier in the week.

According to the Liverpool ECHO, Ramsay has now been demoted to wearing the No. 47 shirt, previously occupied by Nat Phillips.

The 22-year-old played in Liverpool U21s friendly against Hull City on Saturday, and is said to have produced ‘a fine bit of skill’ to create a chance for himself. But despite his clear quality, injuries have meant that Ramsay’s future looks to be away from Liverpool.

What next for Ramsay?

Ramsay’s story at Liverpool is a very sad one in many ways. In a parallel universe, the Scotsman is gearing up to battle Bradley to be the Reds’ starting right-back this summer.

The former Aberdeen man certainly has the quality, and there is even an argument that he is technically even better than Bradley. But injuries have ruined his career so far.

A problem picked up during his medical meant that Ramsay was never able to get going after signing for Liverpool, and from there it seemed to be issue after issue.

Four different loan spells have all failed to come to fruition and it now looks impossible for Ramsay to have a career at Anfield.

With two years left on his contract, it seems unlikely anyone will make it worth Liverpool’s while with a permanent sale this summer. As a result, the youngster will likely head out on-loan once again. Let’s hope he can make it stick this time.
