Mohsin Naqvi Breaks Silence On Jason Gillespie's Shock Resignation: Aa Coach's Job Is To...'

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi broke silence on Jason Gillespie 's shocking resignation as Pakistan head coach. Gillespie, who joined Pakistan as red-ball coach earlier this year, stepped down ahead of the team's tour to South Africa. Gillespie was upset after PCB sacked assistant coach Tim Neilsen without consulting him.

"There were certainly challenges. I went into the job eyes wide open, I want to make that really clear. I knew that, you know, Pakistan had cycled through a number of coaches in a pretty short space of time," Gillespie told ABC Sport. "The straw that broke the camel's back, I suppose, was, as a head coach, you like to have clear communication with your employer. I was completely and utterly blindsided by a decision to not have a high-performance coach."

However, that was not the only reason why the former Australia cricketer was miffed with the board. The board had also barred the coaches from having a say in the selection matters, following which Gary Kirsten stepped down as white-ball coach.

Mohsin Naqvi spoke on Gillespie's reservations and said the team selection is the matter of selectors and the coach's role is to coach the team.

“The head coach’s role is to coach the team, while the selection committee is supposed to select players," Naqvi said as quoted by GeoNews.

While it's true that selectors are there to pick the team but a coach is not a mere match-day specialist. In top cricket countries like India, coach and captain are allowed to give their inputs. India coach Gautam Gambhir played a big role in the selection of Washington Sundar, Nitish Reddy, and Harshit Rana in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025.

Following Gillespie's resignation, Aqib Javed took over as interim head coach of Pakistan across formats.
