No matter the football competition, Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani believes that her side will always be a contender to win silverware. The upcoming EURO 2025 tournament is no different. Despite a difficult group that involves Denmark, Germany and debutants Poland, the 35-year-old believes the Scandinavians have what it takes to go all the way.History backs her claims, too. In the editions of the European Championship that they have qualified for, Sweden has finished in the top four on all but two occasions, winning the inaugural outing back in 1984.“In Sweden, we have a lot of expectations – we’re always a contender,” she told Olympics.com.“That’s always our goal in every tournament that we are in. We have won Olympic silver medals, World Cup bronze… but we don’t like that we don’t have a gold, so I would love one for sure.”Despite confidence in herself and her teammates, though, Asllani recognises the growth of the women’s game over the years.More investment has resulted in the sport becoming more competitive, which makes each upcoming tournament cycle among the toughest to date.“If you [look at] women’s sport now, all the countries that have invested a lot [have helped] create a better product,” she added.“England, France, Germany, Spain… so many contenders. It’s amazing – I think it’s one of the most unpredictable years.”
