How India can qualify for Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 semi

The Indian cricket team will take on New Zealand in their penultimate league game of the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Thursday.

Currently holding the fourth spot in the league table with four points from five matches and a net run rate of +0.526, Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. will look to pull clear in the race for the final semi-final berth when they face the White Ferns.

How can India qualify for the Women's World Cup 2025 semi-finals?

As per the format of the Women's World Cup 2025, all eight teams face each other once in the league phase and the top four make the semi-finals.

The Indian women’s cricket team’s 2025 World Cup campaign began with convincing wins over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh but narrow defeats to confirmed semi-finalists South Africa, Australia and England have complicated the team’s passage to the semis.

New Zealand also have four points (one win, two washouts and two losses) from five games - the same as India - but trail the co-hosts on net run rate (-0.245).

The White Ferns will need to win against India to have any realistic chance of securing a place in the semi-finals.

For India, a win against New Zealand on Thursday will seal a place in the semi-finals as the number of victories takes precedence over net run rate in case of a tie on points.

It would be India’s third win, ensuring their progression even if they lose their final league game to Bangladesh and New Zealand go on to beat England.

A loss, however, complicates matters for the Indian women's cricket team.

Should New Zealand win, India will need to bank on England to defeat the White Ferns in their final league stage match while also securing victory against Bangladesh themselves to qualify.

A washout on Thursday also favours India as they have one win more than New Zealand in the tournament so far. Also, New Zealand face four-time champions and world No. 2 England in their last league game, while India will face seventh-ranked Bangladesh.
