The Kyler Murray era with the Arizona Cardinals is at its end.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the team has informed the quarterback of its plans to release him on the first day of the league’s new year on Mar. 11 if he is not traded before then.

The Cards owe Murray $36.8 million guaranteed for 2026 and would owe him $19.5 million for 2027 should he remain under contract by Mar. 15.

Murray, 28, was the first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma, with whom he won the Heisman Trophy in 2018, and has spent the past seven seasons with the Cardinals. A foot injury limited his season to just five games in 2025.

For his career, Murray has thrown for 20,460 yards on 1,974-for-2,941 passing with 121 touchdowns and 60 interceptions. He’s rushed for 3,193 yards and another 32 TDs.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Murray was also taken with the ninth overall selection of the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft by the Oakland Athletics. He signed a deal with the A’s in the summer of 2018 with the intent of playing one year of college football. In February of 2019, he informed the A’s that he would be pursuing football.

Later on Tuesday, Murray released a statement.

“To everyone that supported me and showed kindness to my family and I during my time in AZ, from the bottom of my heart, thank you,” the Bedford, TX native wrote. “I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77 year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us. I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best. I am no stranger to adversity, I am prepared for whatever’s next. I trust in God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it. Godspeed.”
