Best bowling figures in WPL

Since its launch in 2023, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has produced several standout displays of bowling excellence.

Even in the batter-dominated landscape of T20 cricket, bowlers have consistently risen to the occasion, delivering match-winning spells that have swung momentum dramatically and reshaped the course of games.

Tara Norris recorded the first five-wicket haul in WPL history in 2023, delivering a memorable spell for Delhi Capitals against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Coincidentally, Kim Garth also took a fifer for Gujarat Giants against UP Warriorz on the very same day. However, unlike Tara Norris’ effort, Kim Garth's five-wicket haul came in a losing cause.

Australia’s Ellyse Perry holds the record for the best bowling figures in WPL history after finishing with figures of 6/15 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against the Mumbai Indians in the second season.

After RCB won the toss and opted to field, Ellyse Perry ripped through the MI batting line-up with a sharp, incisive spell that dismantled their innings.

Brought into the attack just after the powerplay, she began with a miserly first over, going wicketless but conceding only one run off the bat.

Ellyse Perry was taken for a boundary by Sajeevan Sajana early in her second over, but the Australian responded instantly, striking back on the very next delivery by rattling the batter’s stumps.

She followed it up with two in two, sliding one past Harmanpreet Kaur’s defence to bowl the Mumbai Indians captain first ball. Perry continued her rampage in her third over, first pinning Amelia Kerr LBW before knocking over Amanjot Kaur’s stumps once again.

Her final over brought two more scalps - she uprooted Pooja Vastrakar’s off stump and then trapped Nat Sciver-Brunt in front with the last delivery to complete a sensational spell.

Her devastating spell bundled Mumbai Indians out for a modest 113. Perry then capped a superb all-round display with an unbeaten 40 off 38 balls, earning the Player of the Match award as RCB cruised to a seven-wicket win.

“I really enjoyed bowling. Sometimes, I am just getting walloped all around the ground, then some days it is like this,” Perry summed up her day. “The ball nipped around a little bit and it was fun.”

Remarkably, her six-wicket haul remains the only instance of a player taking six wickets in a single WPL match.

Asha Sobhana holds the record for the best bowling figures in WPL by an Indian bowler. Playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the second season, she returned outstanding numbers of 5/22 against UP Warriorz.

Shreyanka Patil and Nandani Sharma are the only other Indian bowlers to have claimed five-wicket hauls in the WPL.
