While Celtic defeating Rangers is always a big occasion, the most pleasing aspect of their Premier Sports Cup semi-final victory yesterday from an Irish point of view was the contributions of Johnny Kenny.

The Sligo native would score the opening goal of the game with a towering header in the first half, going on to produce an excellent overall display.

Having been called up to the Ireland squad last month, Kenny might well have played his way into contention for the games against Portugal and Hungary later this month.

Celtic Captain Makes Big Prediction About Ireland Hopeful After Rangers Heroics

Johnny Kenny has had to bide his time during his Celtic career. Having joined the club in 2022, he would have loan spells at Queen's Park and Shamrock Rovers before becoming part of the first team squad at Parkhead this season.

Speaking after yesterday's game, Celtic captain Callum McGregor backed Kenny to go right to the very top on the back of his recent form in Glasgow.

It’s always an opportunity for every player when they come in. They’re working so, so hard to develop and get to the level with the first-team boys.

Johnny scores two during the week and you just know, when you’ve been around football a long time, I just knew he would have an impact on Sunday.

He has taken himself to another level in terms of status now, scoring against Rangers, so he’ll be brimming with confidence and the same with young Ossie.

There’s been times where he’s been out the squad but he's a player who trains so hard every day and has a nice finish as well, so he’s one that’s just going to keep developing and strikers with confidence can go and conquer the world.

Johnny Kenny will be aiming to nail down a consistent spot in the Celtic team over the coming weeks, while an Ireland debut later this month also looks like a real possibility.

Judging by his recent form, there could be a lot more to come from the 22-year old at club and international level over the next few seasons.
