Andre Agassi thinks he knows why Lorenzo Musetti got injured against Carlos Alcaraz

The French Open ended in heartbreak for Lorenzo Musetti as he was forced to retire in the fourth set of his match against Carlos Alcaraz.

After taking the first set 6-4, Musetti kept his foot to the floor and had Alcaraz on the ropes in the second, before losing a tie-breaker.

Last year’s champion then sensed an opportunity and rattled through the third set in a little over 20 minutes, taking it with a bagel.

Just two games into the fourth, Musetti cut a frustrated figure as he walked to the net, tore the headband from his brow and offered his hand in congratulations to Alcaraz.

It’s frustrating for him to lose in such a manner after giving everything he had for over two hours, and this defeat will sting for a while.

Andre Agassi shares when he thought Lorenzo Musetti got injured

The 1999 champion has been doing some pundit work for TNT Sports during the French Open, and he has been discussing the injury picked up by Musetti.

He thinks that the fact he put everything into the first two sets ultimately cost him his fitness, and it might be something for him to look at in the future.

He said: “Well, there’s no question. I was disappointed and there’s no question that if you have anything that’s sort of nickel and diamond, you’re out there, I mean, the ask is just simply too much.

“I mean, this match started off with Alcaraz probably not being nearly his best. Musetti was coming out knowing what he needed to do, pulling triggers as he needed to, executing almost seamlessly, flawlessly, before Alcaraz could finally find his range.

“And then once he found his range, I really thought we were going to settle into a good one, but it’s not easy.

“I mean, when I talk about sliding out there and talking about those little things that can get to you, we saw that end up being the difference.”

Blockbuster French Open now in store

Nothing against Musetti, but had he got through to the final, there would have been a feeling of whether or not it would be a case of After the Lord Mayor’s Show.

Alcaraz, however, is a proven winner and he’s showcased over his young career that he can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the world of tennis.

Whether it’s Sinner or Djokovic who awaits him in the final remains to be seen, but most neutrals will surely be hoping for the very first battle between Sinner and Alcaraz in a Grand Slam final.

It’s a shame that the full match couldn’t be completed for Musetti but having reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon 12 months ago, he will fancy a good run at that tournament later this month.
