Yuzvendra Chahal made a statement with his attire as he attended the hearing of his joint divorce plea with choreographer Dhanashree Verma at a family court in Mumbai. The leg-spinner wore a customised T-shirt bearing the message: "Be Your Own Sugar Daddy." Chahal and his now former wife were granted a divorce by the Bandra Family Court on Thursday, March 20.

The 34-year-old cricketer complied with the consent terms, which required him to pay alimony of Rs 4.75 crore to 28-year-old Dhanashree Verma. He initially paid Rs 2.37 crore, with the remaining amount set to be paid after the divorce decree was granted.

'Being your own sugar daddy' is an often used phrase for referring to someone who is financially independent, rather than relying on someone else for financial support or gifts.

Chahal and Dhanashree married in 2020 and had been living apart since June 2022. The pair filed a plea for divorce by mutual consent on February 5. However, the family court initially refused to waive the six-month mandatory cooling-off period, citing partial compliance with the divorce settlement terms, including the incomplete payment of alimony. Chahal and Dhanashree subsequently filed a joint plea in the Bombay High Court, seeking an exemption from the cooling-off period.

The High Court then directed the family court to rule on the divorce plea by Thursday, waiving the six-month cooling-off period.

Rumours of Chahal and Dhanashree's separation began circulating earlier in 2024. The cricketer and his ex-wife removed photos of themselves as a couple from each other's social media accounts. However, both continued to share cryptic posts while remaining tight-lipped about the speculation.

In February, Dhanashree Verma's family lawyer told India Today that a joint plea for divorce had been filed and confirmed that the two had been living separately.

Chahal was also spotted sitting alongside RJ Mahvash while cheering for the Indian cricket team during the Champions Trophy final in Dubai.

The leg-spinner will rejoin the Punjab Kings camp ahead of their IPL 2025 opener against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, 25 March. Chahal was bought by Punjab for ?18 crore. He will join Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting in what promises to be an excitinng squad.
