The ICC Champions Trophy is considered the most prestigious ODI cricket tournament in the globe after the 50-over World Cup.

Organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the first edition of the Champions Trophy cricket tournament was hosted by Bangladesh in 1998.

At the time, it was called the ICC KnockOut Trophy owing to the nature of the competition. South Africa became the inaugural Champions Trophy winners after beating the West Indies in the final.

The first couple of editions of the Champions Trophy were held in ICC Associate member nations to increase the popularity of the sport in these regions. Kenya hosted the tournament in 2000.

The tournament was dubbed as the Champions Trophy, and also the Mini World Cup, from the 2002 edition onwards owing to a change in the format of the tournament.

Champions Trophy 2002 and all subsequent editions of the tournament witnessed teams competing in a round-robin format followed by knockout matches, including the semi-finals and the final.

From the 2009 edition onwards, only the top eight ODI teams (based on the ICC rankings on a pre-decided qualification cutoff date) compete in the Champions Trophy.

The fact that seven different teams have won the Champions Trophy in its eight editions so far further accentuates the tournament’s unpredictability and standing.
