'We have two plans'

Manchester United’s summer transfer plans will be heavily affected by the Europa League final defeat.

Lifting the trophy in Bilbao would have given Manchester United a third trophy in three seasons and qualified the Red Devils for the Champions League.

Before the final, expert Kieran Maguire explained the financial importance of the Europa League final to United given the club’s lack of cash.

The Europa League prize money from finishing second will provide a small cash injection, but the transfer budget would have been hugely inflated if United had beaten Tottenham.

Ruben Amorim on Man United’s summer transfer plans

Earlier this month, Amorim sent a warning to Viktor Gyokeres insisting that United will not be signing any players who only want to join if the club qualify for the Champions League.

However, missing out on Europe will inevitably dent United’s transfer plans, both in terms of budget and players available.

After losing in Bilbao, Ruben Amorim was asked about United’s transfer business.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Amorim said: “We have two plans for the market.

“We need to understand it’s tough not to be in the Champions League, but we have to use the other side.

“We have more time to work in the week and be better in the Premier League. That will be our focus.”

Reports claimed Ederson wanted Champions League football to join United, so it seems that is another deal that can be ruled out.

Man United miss out on £100m+ payday

United should be more disappointed about throwing away a potential trophy rather than the financial impact, but it simply can’t be ignored.

Winning the Europa League would have provided a minimum of £100 million to United through qualifying for the Champions League and the matchday income that would have followed.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has previously claimed that United were going bust in 2025 before he implemented cost-cutting measures around Old Trafford and Carrington.

Without the financial boost from European football, Ineos will have to re-think their summer transfer strategy and give up on chasing some of the club’s top targets.

Matheus Cunha is expected to join for £62.5m, but it seems that could take a sizeable chunk out of United’s budget.
