Nemanja Vidic thinks Michael Carrick’s 'strong character' makes him more than an interim

Nemanja Vidic has now dropped a powerful assessment from his time playing alongside Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick returned to Old Trafford in January and Ineos appointed the 44-year-old Manchester United legend as interim boss until the rest of the season.

The former Middlesbrough manager has played a key role in sparking a major turnaround in form for the Red Devils since Ruben Amorim was sacked at United.

Carrick has overseen six Premier League wins from eight matches in the post-Ruben Amorim era, with his first major setback happening against Newcastle last week.

Manchester United’s scintillating start under Michael Carrick came to an end after 10-man Newcastle secured a late 2-1 win over the Red Devils at St James’ Park.

The Red Devils currently remain third in the Premier League table after last Wednesday’s result, but Carrick’s side struggled in the second half of their clash.

Ahead of Man Utd’s defeat to Newcastle, Carrick’s in-form Red Devils team had only dropped points to West Ham in a 1-1 Premier League away draw in February.

Nemanja Vidic has now explained that former Man Utd teammate Carrick does hold a “strong opinion” on football, but he does not push it onto others if they do not ask.

“Michael was a good teammate who tried to control his emotions and think clearly,” he said, as per The Athletic.

“He has his own opinions but doesn’t push to tell [them] if nobody asks. But he has a side where he has a strong opinion on how he sees football.”

Carrick has received strong praise for his work at Man Utd and his immediate impact after he replaced Ruben Amorim in the Old Trafford hot seat in January.

United legend Vidic revealed that Carrick was a “strong character” when he shared the dressing room with him, despite his former teammate not always expressing it.

“He’s not necessarily loud, a screamer or a shouter, someone who says that he’s the cleverest in the room, but he’s a strong character, and he needs to be,” he added.

“But forget the future for now, enjoy the present.”

Man Utd are back in Premier League action at Old Trafford on Sunday and Carrick’s Red Devils side will host Aston Villa for a 2pm kick-off in the UK.
