'It's not going to be easy at Tottenham'

"I'm a little bit sad to concede two goals, it was not necessary to concede them. It was our mistakes, we opened the pitch after 4-0. but of course we are still happy, you have to enjoy and be thankful for every win.

Tottenham midfielder Archie Gray: "It's obviously a disappointing result. We didn't help ourselves with the best start. It was difficult to come back into the game after that. We have to focus on the next game and the second leg after that.

"It's difficult, mistakes happen, it's part of football. Tony [Kinsky] is young. I have made mistakes, everyone has, especially when you are younger. When it costs goals it is disappointing. But he is strong mentally so he will get through this, he'll be alright.

"We have got to take responsibility, what's happened this game and in the Premier League. In quite a lot of games this season it's been unacceptable. We have to take responsibility and push on."

'We need to stay calm - less talking'

"A change of competition, it was the right moment. Unfortunately, what happened, happened. I never changed a goalkeeper after 20 minutes."

On if he has spoken to Kinsky: "We don't need to comment. It's not the moment to speak too much. It was a strange game, very strange game. We gave them three goals. We even started good then the problems kill us in three situations.

"Very, very strange. Very unusual. It took our confidence. We had an opportunity to make it 4-2 then we concede a goal for 5-1.

"We apologise to the fans and to everyone. It's a difficult moment. Everything looks like going wrong. Small mistakes, we pay. Everything, unbelievable.

"Even this situation at the end, two players [colliding]. It felt like everything was going against us."

On why things aren't working: "I need to keep working. Not speaking too much, stay focused on the things we can do. It's unbelievably difficult to explain all these things, the first time in my career that I saw these things, 15 years.

"I'm focused on the problems, the players also. We need to stay positive."

On if he thinks board will stick with him: "It's not about me. We need to stay calm. Less talking.

"Better less talking. Now is not the moment to try and give a big explanation."

'Tottenham has become a business'

You need someone who has a football mindset and wants to make Tottenham Hotspur a great club. They have the money to make this club massive.

'Spurs have big decision to make on Tudor'

This is the question Tottenham’s board will be asking themselves after Igor Tudor’s latest aberration: are the players responding to the manager’s methods?

The answer appears clear. Four games, four losses. Fourteen goals conceded.

Results aside, sources have indicated to BBC Sport in recent days that members of the Tottenham squad are still to be convinced that Tudor has the tools to guide this struggling team away from the sorry predicament in which they find themselves.

So, with that in mind, the club’s hierarchy clearly have a big decision to make.

Before their latest loss at the Metropolitano Stadium, internal concerns over Tudor’s position had already started to generate.

This result will only serve to sharpen the focus on Tudor’s job security in the coming days.

Before the clash in Spain, there was a sense that a positive performance in Madrid could be used as a building block for Tudor ahead of a crucial game at Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend.

You wonder if the manner of this loss - and the sub-plots that unravelled on a tortuous night for Spurs - has altered the direction of travel.

Tudor was appointed because of his track record in sparking immediate improvements at other clubs, namely at Juventus and Lazio.

The Croatian’s arrival has heralded the opposite effect. That, coupled with what some have described as a “disconnect” between players and the manager, leaves Tudor under increased scrutiny.

A decision to sack Tudor so soon after his appointment would provide a clear admission of error from the Tottenham hierarchy. The club’s ownership, you’d imagine, will be demanding answers.

But keeping Tudor may prove an even bigger mistake with Tottenham’s top-flight status on the line.

'A tough one to take'

Newcastle's Harvey Barnes, speaking to TNT Sports: "It is a bit of a strange feeling, we are only halfway through the tie, we played really well tonight, kept their dangerous players quiet. We got ahead with a good goal but the way it ended it is a tough one to take but we have to remember it is only halfway through the tie.

"We played really well in the game. We were on top for a lot of it.

"It will be a different sort of game at their place, but we know what we can do and we know when we are at our level how well we can play.

"What a feeling it would have been to go there 1-0 up but we are level in the tie and all to play for. It is one game, away from home, where we can show what we can do.

"It will be an exciting game for us."

'One of our best performances'

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to TNT Sports: "I thought we were outstanding, a really, really good performance. We kept the intensity up. The moment at the end takes that in a negative light but one of our best performances."

On the Barcelona penalty: "I think it is soft but Malik makes contact.

"We had our shape, there's no way we should concede that goal. We will look at it but I don't want it to override the 93 minutes before that, in which we were quality.

"I thought we had enough to score before we did. The game showed we are capable but we know we probably have to give more going to their stadium. We are capable of doing it but we will need to be at our very best.

"It is my job to try and pick them up. We have unfortunately had to do that a few times this season but our strength of character should never be in doubt. We will be ready by the time the next game comes round.

"We believe in ourselves and our capability and we have shown that today."
