Real Madrid vs Manchester City: as it happened

Real Madrid, how did we doubt you?

We doubted them because they weren't very good, in fact, they were terrible. On so many occasions this season, Madrid's heroes have failed to shine, but not tonight.

Not on the night where it mattered, on Madrid's biggest game of the season, and without so many stars.

No Mbappé, no Bellingham, no Rodrygo. Vini not firing and the defence quaking.

And then Valverde stepped up, scoring after 20 minutes and then 7 later, shocking the crowd who were watching Madrid ‘like they did in the before times’, when Madrid did this for fun against Europe's elite.

The Uruguayan got another before half-time to make the crowd sing, with City on the ropes like we have seen before, but did not expect now.

And the inertia carried on into the second half. Despite Vini Jr missing from the spot, the energy remained, and City could not cope. Courtois pulled off some typical Courtois, like we have seen before, and the jubilant noise from all four sides of one of Europe's great venues carried the side, drained by the end of it all, over the line.

Now, onto Manchester.

That's all, folks!

We'll leave it there.

What a night for Real Madrid, who take a stunning lead to Manchester for the second leg of an intriguing tie in the Champions League.

A perfect score from the Sofascore crew

Of course, Fede gets his 10 from the boffins in Sofascore Towers, much deserved.

Fede Valverde: post-game interview:

Incredible, it's a dream. Thanks to my teammates for making me happy and to the coach, who has helped me, even in a tough season.

It was one of my best games, in terms of goals, I am happy but above all for the win.

That's what the coach asks me to do, we had more midfielders today so I tried more to score.

We trained this from goal-kicks, to go one vs one, and attack the spaces in behind.

We have to act like brothers, and protect each other and stay united, fight for each other, and work together.

The final few minutes we were tired, but we worked hard. The games in Manchester are hard, they press well, but we play like it's 0-0 and that it.

I'll give the match ball to my kids!

Fede Valverde, Real Madrid

Valverde 20, 27, 42

90+4

FULL-TIME!

WHAT A WIN FOR REAL MADRID!

90+4

Into the final minute as the Bernabéu sings Valverde's name.

90+2

City work the ball well inside and out, but the cross never comes and the clock ticks on...

Tchouameni goes down and Madrid get a much deserved breather.

90+1

The two pistons hanging from Valverde's shorts keep pumping as he pushes the ball past the City back line and chases it down. Vini Jr can't get on the end of his weak pass and City recover.

90

4 added minutes.

90

Into the final minute of normal time.

89

Reijnders plays it short to Marmoush, who stings the palms of the Belgian giant.

89

Manuel Ángel fouls Marmoush on the very edge of the box, and City have a chance to cross in from the left.

88

Madrid are camped on the edge of their box as they allow City to play left and right...

87

That just about sums up City today: Rodri is alone in his own half, under no pressure at all, and plays a terrible pass towards the other side of the pitch that flies out of play.

86

Two substitutes work well, as Carvajal throws the ball onto Mastantuono's back and it bobbles out of play.

85

Carvajal's first involvement is to complain at Marmoush for going down too easily inside the box.

84

And just like that, he's off

OFF: Trent

ON: Carvajal

84

Trent is flying now, timing his challenge on Doku to perfection.

83

City change:

OFF: Haaland

ON: Marmoush

82

Trent, objectively Madrid's worst player on a good night, has just felt the swagger of wearing the white shirt at the Bernabéu in the Champions League, and flicked the ball over the head of an oncoming opponent.

81

Into the final 10 minutes...

80

Doku dances past Fran García who thinks twice about sticking a leg in on a loose ball, instead allowing the giraffe behind him to grasp it with his hosepipe arms.

79

Madrid appear to have found a second wind, with Mastantuono leading the line in the aggressive press.

Wow, what a save that was. Thiago tried to spin inside the box and miscalculated the time and space he had, with O'Reilly pouncing.

It's pure instinct from Courtois sees him stick out a leg to poke the ball behind.

77

More Madrid subs:

OFF: Brahim, Thiago

ON: Mastantuono, Ángel

74

SAVE! Courtois extends his go-go-gadget legs and somehow stops O'Reilly poking home from a few yards out following a huge brain freeze from Thiago in his own box!

73

Reijnders hits a long-range effort which deflects off Tchouameni and over Courtois' goal.

72

On second viewing, it's a terrible mistake from Dias to control the ball into Brahim's path, but his recovery is well-timed and perfectly legal.

71

HUGE penalty shout for Madrid as Brahim is brought down by Dias following a mix up in the City box. The refree waves play on as the centre-back appears to make contact with the ball first.

Hmm, it seems Fede is OK to carry on, for now...

70

Madrid change:

OFF: Arda

ON: Camavinga

Madrid's change halted...

It looks like Valverde is down injured and Camavinga's introduction will wait.

70

City subs:

OFF: Bernardo, Semenyo

ON: Ait Nouri, Cherki

68

CLOSE! Haaland looks set to score but Rüdiger's boot clips Semenyo's low cross up and away from the goal line!

66

CLOSE! Superb play from Madrid.

A well worked move that starts with Thiago receiving inside from Courtois and spraying play out wide is worked the other way to Vini, who bends a shot past Donnarumma's far post from the edge of the box.

Acres of space between City's lines that has Pep fuming.

Exactly that, he's back on now after a rub of the magic sponge and its contents.

It looks like some magic water will be enough for Tchouameni to carry on...

65

We're back underway and Madrid are momentarily down to 10 men.

Cherki is preparing to come on for City as Tchouameni is walked off the pitch by Madrid's medical staff.

64

Uh oh... Tchouameni is down on the turf holding his ankle.

62

Valverde darts inside and lays off to Vini Jr, who squirms to his left and flicks a weak shot into Donnarumma's grasp. Güler recovers the immediate loose ball form a poor kick out and flashes a shot past the far post.

62

Madrid content to arrive at City's area and hold the ball to draw them out. They are in no rush to overload the box and create spaces for the green shirts to pounce into on the counter.

60

An hour gone, and City are pressing hard to get one back on the scoreboard.

A penalty as bad as Valverde's goals were good. Vini Jr's weak effort to his right is easily met by Donnarumma's huge hand.

The player apologises to the crowd, and rightly so.

58

SAVED!!!!

DONNARUMMA SAVES THE PENALTY!

Vini Jr to take the penalty...

Donnarumma is given a yellow for that foul.

A long ball is met by Vini Jr. He races into the box and skips past the Italian goalkeeper who makes clear contact with his legs.

56

PENALTY TO REAL MADRID

VINI BROUGHT DOWN BY DONNARUMMA

55

Semenyo gets in behind Madrid's left side and thumps a low shot into Courtois. Corner to City.

53

Doku dances past Trent and Brahim races back to swipe the ball out for a throw. Intensity holding for the white shirts.

51

Doku plays Reijnders in behind and the midfielder spins on a sixpence before lopping in a cross that is cleared away.

50

City are certainly moving the ball around a bit better with an extra body in the middle, but Madrid's press is keeping up with them and the crowd are reminding them that they can't let up.

48

O'Reilly looks to have messed up a clear chance to squeeze in at the backpost from a City corner, but the referee had already blown for a foul.

47

SAVE! City start with the ball, pulling Real Madrid right and left on the edge of the box. Real Madrid counter and Vini Jr almost pokes Brahim's deflected effort past Donnarumma!

46

Let's see how that City change switches things up...

46

Second half underway!

Madrid get us going.

HT

Man City change:

OFF: Savinho

ON: Reijnders

HT

Real Madrid change

OFF: Mendy

ON: Fran García

The players are back in the tunnel

Almost ready for the second half!

Marvellous Fede

Some night for ‘The Falcon’!

Fede not the only star

Thiago has also shone in the middle of the pitch, putting on a show in his biggest moment.

A mind-blowing performance

Real Madrid have blown Manchester City away in that first half of football!

Champions League Real Madrid still exist, in case you had any doubts.

The 15-time champions are wiping the floor with a City side that many fans were fearing as they ate their cereal this morning!

HT: Who had that scoreline on their bingo card?

45+1

Half-time!

Well, well, well...

45

1 added minute.

44

Back underway...

It's a stunning goal from the 2026 Ballon d'Or winner. The ball is flicked to him inside the box, where his touch takes it over the head of the City defender as he slips around him to meet the volley that is poked past Donnarumma.

Simply sensational. The Bernabéu crowd are on their feet.

42

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL

FEDE HAT-TRICK!!!

SENSATIONAL!

42

Courtois catches Doku's cross but that only came in after a pass from Trent that he needs to be careful with - any more of them and Spurs will try to sign him...

40

Valverde heads away but Real Madrid win a free-kick for excessive pushing and shoving.

40

Five to go of normal time. City corner...

39

Bernardo's corner flies into the box and lands on the other side of the pitch. Doku collects and sees his cross deflect out for a corner.

37

Bernardo Silva sends in a deep free-kick and it's headedaway by Güler, who is not Real Madrid's tallest player. In fact, he makes Brahim look like Ibrahimovic.

It doesn't matter though, as he's full of juice and confidence and leaps 3 feet into the air.

35

It's played short to Semenyo who dances past a couple of challenges and plays the cross in. City work it back from Doku to the centre of the pitch and the Real Madrid press then jumps in to force the play back to halfway.

Applause from the home crowd.

34

City win a free kick on the right side as Savinho is brought down by Tchouameni. A breather for the away side and a chance to send the ball into the box, where they haven't been for a while.

33

Haaland finds space to take Rodri's pass behind Madrid's midfield and arches his back as he drives towards goal. The ball is poked away from his toes thanks to a solid Rüdiger intervention.

30

Half an hour gone and I don't think anyone predicted this, not even the most Madridista of Madridistas...

28

Well, well, well. Back underway!

Vini Jr drives at the City defence and flicks a pass through to Mbapp- Valverde, who takes a touch to the left before sneaking a low shot in at the far post!

27

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL

VALVERDE!!!!

25

Superb play from Madrid as Thiago and Rüdiger almost get mixed up at the back; Trent dives in to take the ball from Haaland's feet before playing into Arda, who switches the play and moves his side out of danger.

23

Madrid appear to be having fun with the ball and the crowd are reacting in kind; Arda Güler is dancing in the middle of the pitch, evading challenges.

21

Back underway. Noise levels reaching those of interstellar explosions.

Boom! Out of nowhere!

A long ball towards the right is met by Valverde, whose first touch is sublime, taking it away from O'Reilly and in behind the City defence.

His second touch is enough to tap it past Donnarumma, and the Uruguayan slides the ball into the back of the empty net from a tight angle.

20

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAALLLL

FEDE VALVERDE SCORES!!!

MADRID ARE AHEAD

19

Rodri is so cool. He takes the ball down from a throw-in (the single hardest thing ever in football), and simply slides away from Thiago Pitarch's attempt at robbing possession, ruffling his hair on the way past.

19

3-foot-6 Brahim clambers onto the hind of 7-foot-3 Rodri and somehow succeeds in bringing him down.

18

Vini cuts the ball back to Tchouameni on the edge of the box but his shot is blocked by Dias.

17

A low corner is fired in towards Semenyo, who slips and gives away a handball. It's just as well for Madrid, as they didn't spot that and the attacker was all alone inside the box.

16

Valverde puts the ball out for a corner after Doku gets in behind Trent (again).

15

The first whistles of the night come as City string 15 passes together, all without advancing more than 20 yards into Madrid's half. A bit soon, if you ask me, but who am I to judge?

13

O'Reilly gets down the left and fires a cross over to the right side of the pitch. Again, there was space behind Trent Alexander-Arnold that was the target of a search & destroy plan from City.

12

A few scarily tense passes at the back ends with Rúdiger hoofing the ball into City's half. That was not fun for the 85,000 souls in the stands.

10

OK, so now we've had ten minutes, I can tell you all about Real Madrid's structure: there isn't any. They've all been dropped into a bowl of jelly and are sloshing around, moving wherever they please and confusing me.

What's clear is that Arda and Thiago are central midfielders, along with Tchouameni; the centre-backs are centre-backs and Courtois is in goal.

My analysis ends there. Everyone else is covered in jelly.

9

Rüdiger meets the subsequent corner with his huge head but it's blocked by a wall of City shirts.

9

SHOT! Brahim is fed the ball over City's defence as Vini pulls off a nice flick from the edge of the area. He battles with Guéhi and pops off a shot to test Donnarumma early on.

8

CLOSE! Read my previous post. Exactly the same. There's a way in for City.

7

CLOSE! Doku gets down the left and fires a low cross into the box that trickles agonisingly past Courtois and out for a goal kick.

6

City counter with Haaland... and Huijsen gets a huge cheer for bringing him down.

City recover and Madrid panic with Savinho now showing his talents inside the box. The ball is scrambled away.

5

This game has started at lightning pace and Madrid get into City's defensive third, where Güler's low cross is deflected away.

4

And there we get our first taste of Wingers FC, with City recovering the ball on halfway and popping off to Doku, who races towards goal.

An inevitable tangle of legs from the winger, running at speeds he regularly forgets he can achieve, sees him fall over.

3

To be fair to the crowd, this is some noise inside the Bernabéu...

2

Madrid with some early possession as the noise levels keep the stadium walls bouncing; City are sitting in a 4-4-2 with Haaland and Semenyo up top as they shuffle in their defensive block.

1

Brahim is Madrid's central attacker, with Fede wide right and Arda/Thiago sitting in the middle of the park.

1

And we're off!

City get the ball rolling, and they're kicking from right to left.

Kit check:

Madrid are, as you'd expect, in all white; City's players are wearing a lovely shade of what I'd call forest green. Almost your classic British racing green, like a nice Aston Martin.

The Chaaaaampiooons!

The famous anthem rings around the Bernabéu as the flappy ball is duly flapped in the centre circle.

A final reminder of the XIs:

Real Madrid:

Courtois; Trent, Huijsen, Rüdiger, Mendy; Tchouameni, Arda, Valverde, Brahim, Thiago; Vini Jr

Man City:

Donnarumma; Khusanov, Dias, Guéhi, O'Reilly; Rodri, Bernardo; Savinho, Semenyo, Doku; Haaland

Ready to go!

The players are in the tunnel!

A superb atmosphere!

The Bernabéu crowd is ready for this one, we're just waiting on the players!

Ten minutes to go!

The players have finished their warmups and are heading back down the tunnel for the final team talks before kick-off!

An incredibly dynamic City awaits...

Semenyo, Doku, and Savinho is certainly a surprise from Guardiola, who appears to be favouring dynamism and instilling primal fear against Real Madrid's defensive unit.

Suspension watch!

Aurélien Tchouaméni, Dean Huijsen and Vinicius Júnior are all one yellow card away from missing out on the fun and games of the second leg in Manchester.

Marc Guéhi, Nico O'Reilly, and Savinho are all in the same position for the away side tonight.

A reminder of the starting XIs:

Real Madrid:

Courtois; Trent, Huijsen, Rüdiger, Mendy; Tchouameni, Arda, Valverde, Brahim, Thiago; Vini Jr

Man City:

Donnarumma; Khusanov, Dias, Guéhi, O'Reilly; Rodri, Bernardo; Savinho, Semenyo, Doku; Haaland

Marcelo interview teaser

Here's a sneak peak at our AS USA exclusive Marcelo interview...

Champions League

Guti interview: “This is Real Madrid, it’s always tough to be the coach”

But don't think we're stopping there with the exclusive AS USA content!

Guti spoke to our very own version of Michael Parkinson, Will Gittins, where he did open up on Madrid’s struggles this season, as well as his own experiences of playing in the heavy white shirt in Europe’s elite tournament.

Weather check!

We've had some pretty gloomy weather recently but today is positively pleasant, with the sun keeping the sky blue all day and temperatures hovering around 15ºC/59ºF.

Fede Valverde pre-game:

The coach wants me to move wide, receive the ball and combine with the fullback or the winger. Sometimes I’m asked to play more freely, score or provide assists. I try to adapt. For me, just being in the starting eleven is what matters most.

Fede Valverde, Real Madrid

What’s coming is incredible – it’s the kind of game anyone loves to play,” he said. “We know how important the fans are, because with them everything becomes easier. We need them, and then it’s up to us to give our maximum.

Fede Valverde, Real Madrid

Here I have everything – this is the best club in the world and there are the best people here,” he said. “I trust everyone at the club. I put my body in the hands of a physio here and leave the opinions to what he believes. I’m very calm and only thinking about City.

Fede Valverde, Real Madrid

A sneak peak into the Bernabéu dressing room

Here's a look into where the magic happens...

Who to watch: Man City

Rodri is an easy option, but there is more nuance than the fact he’s won a Ballon d’Or.

A long-term injury has seen him spend more time on the bench than the pitch over the last year, and this high-profile game will no doubt be a huge test of his mental and physical recovery.

I’d’ also keep an eye out for Cherki, who has routinely impressed in the Premier League this season.

Champions League

Real Madrid vs Manchester City head-to-head: Nothing separates Champions League rivals

The players are here!

Both sets of players have arrived at the ground as the atmosphere heats up!

Who to watch: Real Madrid

This is a tough one, as there have been a few stinkers lately from Real Madrid players, but I’m going to pick out Aurelien Tchouameni for tonight’s game. He has arguably been Madrid’s most consistent performer this season, anchoring the midfield and even popping up with agoal last weekend against Celta Vigo.

The Frenchman has had a lot to do in a side that has struggled on a number of occasions this season, but he’s been a standout and will need to be at his best tonight.

Champions League

Why is Kylian Mbappé not playing for Real Madrid against Manchester City today in the Champions League?

Kylian Mbappé has been battling knee pain since December, with the forward playing through the pain on numerous occasions until he finally gave in a few games ago.

Since then, rumours of surgery hav come and gone, but he seems to be progressing well, if Arbeloa's words are anything to go by. By all accounts he looks set for the bench next week when City host Madrid in round 2 of this heavyweight tie.

Real Madrid's Champions League so far...

Real Madrid's league phase was going well until it wasn’t, with a late winner from the Benfica goalkeeper pushing them out of the Top 8 and into the playoff round, where they played, erm, Benfica.

Two games against the Portuguese side came and went, but not before the horrific instance of alleged racial abuse aimed at Vini Jr by Gianluca Prestianni, who is under UEFA investigation.

TMPWDL7168512816851291585031015850311148422

MAN CITY XI:

Savinho starts over Cherki, as does Khusanov.

What's on today?

Right now Arsenal are playing away at Bayer Leverkusen which is live on our website, so definitely keep an eye out there.

As for the later games, we've got PSG taking on Chelsea, and Bodø/Glimt host Sporting CP.

All of these games are live on AS USA, so fill your boots!

The Bernabéu may not be full tonight...

While it'll take a mouse's telescope to see that far into the heavens, the top seats of the Bernabéu were still up for sale on the morning of the game.

This is not a regular situation for the club, who have had no problem whatsoever shifting huge numbers of tickets over the seasons.

However, it seems some of the Madridista crowd are not happy with the team, or playing City again is just something they've already experienced.

And then there's the increasingly high prices for tickets across football coupled with financial tension for millions, but don't get me started.

What happened yesterday?

Yesterday was jam-packed with top tier Champions League drama.

Newcastle and Barcelona played out an intense, if not thrilling, 1-1 draw at St. James' Park. Harvey Barnes got the opener before a late Lamine Yamal penalty saw Barcelona take a much-needed draw back to Cataluña for the second leg next week.

Over in Spain, Atlético Madrid met whatever Tottenham Hotspur are trying to be, smashing them 5-2 no thanks to a disaster-class at the back from the London side.

Bayern swept aside Atalanta 1-6 away from home in a truly magnificent performance that will surely see them through, Michael Olise was the star of the show on the night.

And the early kick-off was the perfect warmup for these three fixtures, as Galatasaray got a narrow win over Liverpool, beating them 1-0 in Turkiye thanks to a first half goal from Mario Lemina.

REAL MADRID XI:

Just like clockwork, 1 hour and 24 minutes before kick-off, we've got Real Madrid's starting XI.

Trent takes the right-back position, with Mendy on the other side.

Brahim starts in midfield, with young Thiago alongside him.

All the rest is as you'd expect.

Real Madrid

Marcelo exclusive interview: “It is very difficult for me to say what Ancelotti’s qualities are”

While we wait on the team news, get your teeth into our exclusive chat with legendary Real Madrid left-back, Marcelo.

While he didn't have much to say to myself about the current state of affairs in Madrid, his words of wisdom are evergreen, as is his smile.

Stadium check

As with Signor Referee, if you haven't got the Bernabéu ticked off your Stadiums Around the World book then you need to get out more. A true cathedral of football in Europe, the Bernabéu was built for nights like these.

Except tonight might be a little different, but we'll get to that later.

Who's the ref?

Pecils out! It’s time to tick off Maurizio Mariani from page 41 of the UEFA Official Referee Spotter’s Guide. Although if you haven’t got him then you’ve got some catching up to do. Anyway, everyone’s welcome.

Mariani has some serious Serie A experience, with close to 200 games under his vanishing spray. He also has an anniversary today - 20 Champions League games! - so well done on that.

Manchester City team news:

City are not coming into this with a full squad, either, but theirs is more George Orwell's Animal Farm: a quicker read.

Gvardiol, Kovacic, and Max Alleyne are all out, with Rico Lewis a doubt.

Real Madrid team news:

How long have you got? Real Madrid's injury list is as long as a Tolstoy novel, and it includes Mbappé, Carreras, Bellingham, Rodrygo, Ceballos, Alaba, and Militão.

The injury list, that is, not Tolstoy’s latest.

Welcome!

Hello and a warm welcome from the Spanish capital as we get the juices flowing ahead of Real Madrid hosting Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg.

It's Joe here on duty to guide you through the action as it unfolds at the Bernabéu.
