Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam has opted out of the National T20 Championship to focus on fixing the “flaws in his technique” ahead of the Pakistan Super League, which begins on March 26. Babar was named in the Lahore Whites squad for the National T20 Championship currently being held in Peshawar, despite being dropped from Pakistan’s away ODI series against Bangladesh following a disappointing ICC Men's T20 World Cup campaign.

However, it has now emerged that the star batter will not take part in the domestic tournament and is instead working with a group of coaches to improve his batting. While there has been no official confirmation on who these coaches are, a source close to the Pakistan Cricket Board said Babar and the team management agreed that he should focus on addressing “flaws in his batting technique” rather than feature in the national event. Babar is set to represent Peshawar Zalmi in the upcoming Pakistan Super League and is expected to open the batting for the franchise. The batter, who was once ranked No. 1 in the International Cricket Council rankings across formats, has struggled to rediscover his best form since 2024. During the T20 World Cup — which was won by India national cricket team — he was even dropped for Pakistan’s final Super Eight match against Sri Lanka national cricket team. Babar has not played any domestic tournament since 2020 apart from the PSL. He had also skipped two first-class matches in Pakistan’s premier red-ball domestic competition late last year despite battling poor form at the time.
