Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who announced his retirement from international cricket on December 18, 2024, made a shocking revelation on Sunday (March 16) by saying that he wanted to retire at the end of the India-England Test series in March last year. According to Ashwin, who attended the book launch of Chennai Super Kings, ‘Leo—The Untold Story,’ he had invited legendary Indian cricketer and former captain MS Dhoni for his 100th Test in Dharamsala (March 7-11, 2024) to hand him the memento, as he wanted to make that game his last for Team India.

“I called MS (Dhoni) for my 100th Test (in Dharamshala) to hand over the memento. I wanted to make that my last Test. But he couldn’t make it," Ashwin was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

Ashwin, who is India’s second leading wicket-taker in Tests as well as international cricket, played his 100th Test against England at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium from March 7-9, 2024. He picked up 4 wickets for 51 runs in the first innings and dismissed five English batters for 77 runs in the second innings to seal a memorable win by an innings and 64-run margin.

After starring in India’s 4-1 win over England in front of home fans, Ashwin played two Tests against Bangladesh in September-October, three Tests against New Zealand in October-November and one Test against Australia in December 2024.

He was dropped from India’s playing XI for the third Test against Australia in Brisbane, and at the end of the match, he announced his decision to retire from all forms of the game.

Ashwin, who made his IPL debut for CSK and then also played for Rising Pune Super Giants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, will once again play for CSK in IPL 2025. He was signed for Rs 9.75 crore by the Chennai-based franchise in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

According to Ashwin, he never thought Dhoni would give him the gift of playing for CSK again.

“I didn’t think he (Dhoni) would give me the gift of getting me back to CSK. It’s a much better one. So, thank you, MS, for doing it. I’m glad to be here," he added.
