Former Nigeria international Juwon Oshaniwa has backed Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez to become a key figure for the Super Eagles following his impressive start to international football, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Fernandez scored his first goal for Nigeria in a 2-2 draw against Jordan national football team in Antalya, just days after making his debut in a 2-1 victory over Iran national football team during the March international window.

“It’s clear Emmanuel Fernandez will be a valuable addition to the national team,” Oshaniwa said as quoted by Glasgow Times, reflecting on the defender’s early impact.

The former Hearts full-back, who was part of Nigeria’s victorious squad at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and featured at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, said Fernandez’s development in Scottish football has prepared him for the demands of international competition.

“His strong performance didn’t surprise me because I know the Scottish league is very competitive,” Oshaniwa added.

“And playing in such an environment helped shape Fernandez into a player capable of handling international football.”

Fernandez has quickly established himself as a reliable defensive option, with his physical presence and composure earning praise following his first two appearances.

Oshaniwa further highlighted the importance of the defender’s exposure to a physically demanding league, noting that it gives him an edge within the national team setup.

“Being exposed to a physically demanding and tactically disciplined league makes him well-suited to the challenges of the Super Eagles set-up. He will be very important for the team,” he said.

The 24-year-old joined Rangers from Peterborough United last summer and has grown into a regular starter, featuring in 19 league matches while winning 66 per cent of his ground duels and 72 per cent of his aerial duels, underlining his defensive dominance.

Despite the promising signs, Oshaniwa stressed that the Super Eagles remain a work in progress as they continue to integrate new players into the squad.

“But we are still a work in progress and integrating new players like Fernandez is part of that process, bringing fresh energy and competition into the squad,” he said.
