Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma ’s surprising decision to drop himself from the Sydney Test during the 2024-2025 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia drew a range of public reactions. Sharma’s move sparked a wave of reactions online, with many lauding his selflessness while others saying that it was about time, considering his dwindling form.

Bollywood actress Vidya Balan was among those touched by Sharma’s move, sharing her admiration for him in a post on X. However, her post quickly became the target of speculation, with some accusing her of participating in a publicity stunt by the cricketer's PR team.

On January 4, Vidya Balan took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise Sharma for his bold decision. She wrote, “Rohit Sharma, what a SUPERSTAR! To take a pause & catch your breath requires courage … More power to you … Respect! @ImRo45.” Soon after, eagle-eyed netizens claimed that Balan’s tweet was scripted, alleging she had simply copy-pasted text provided by Sharma’s PR team. The accusations led to a wave of trolling directed at the actress as well as the cricketer.

Balan’s team responds

In response to the backlash, Balan’s team issued a statement firmly denying the allegations. They clarified that the actress was genuinely moved by Sharma’s act and had shared her thoughts without any external influence or for anyone's PR.

"Let it be unequivocally stated that Ms. Balan posted this completely of her own volition because she was moved by his selfless act, and NOT by request from his PR team." the statement read. "Ms. Balan is not an avid sports fan , but she admires those who show dignity and class under trying circumstances. To attribute her actions to anything other than a spontaneous reaction to something she found admirable is completely preposterous," the statement read.
