Speaking in his first interview as United boss, Carrick said: “Nothing beats that. Getting on the grass with the boys is where I want to be, working with them.”

As one of the greatest midfielders to play for United, Carrick knows a thing or two about how to play the game too, and this could be useful considering this is a real problem area for the club.

Michael Carrick was hired onto Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff in 2018, only to see the great manager fired months later.

It was a turbulent time for United’s players, including Fred, who had signed from Shakhtar Donetsk for £47 million in the summer of 2018.

Fred took a little while to find his best form, doing so in the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era, and he credits Carrick’s coaching for turning his career around.

Speaking in an interview back in 2020, the Brazilian said: “Carrick helps me a lot day-to-day. We always talk and he tries to help me with my positioning on the field.

“Carrick’s a guy that always helps me. He’s someone who always talks to me which is important for adapting my football to the English league.“

“When I arrived, I would control the ball in midfield and, well, one or two opposition players would come along and I’d be knocked off the ball. Now I can understand the game better and that I have to be quicker and stronger.

“So Carrick helps me day-to-day, we do some one-to-one training.”

Midfielders take note

Fred went on to play 213 games for United, scoring 14 times, and he became a key starter for the team for a few seasons. He has Carrick to thank for saving his stint, and there are a few players in the United squad who might be able to benefit from the new coach’s magic touch.

Manchester United’s midfield has been the team’s weak spot this season, with fans unconvinced over the best combination.

Manuel Ugarte in particular has struggled, while Kobbie Mainoo has only started in two matches, and lost both of them.

Both players can benefit from guidance from Carrick’s coaching, while there is speculation a new midfielder could arrive in the transfer window.
