Carragher Rubbished Schmeichel Claims About Trent Liverpool Reception

Trent Alexander-Arnold made his first return to Anfield since his summer exit this evening, receiving a rather frosty reception from the crowd as he walked out as a Real Madrid player.

While the Englishman would not start the game, that did not stop the Liverpool fans from making their feelings known. Alexander-Arnold would walk out to a chorus of boos as he made his way onto the pitch for his warmup.

Such a reception was expected, with the player's return to Merseyside a big topic of conversation in the buildup to this Champions League fixture.

Carragher Rubbished Schmeichel Claims About Trent Liverpool Reception

This is not the first occasion that Trent Alexander-Arnold has been booed at Anfield, with the player jeered by some Liverpool players towards the end of last season after he announced his move to Spain. In saying that, the reaction to his arrival on the pitch was overwhelmingly negative this time around.

Speaking on CBS Sports live from the ground, Peter Schmeichel said he found the reception given to the player 'disgusting'. That is not a view shared by Jamie Carragher, who said that the Liverpool fans felt 'hoodwinked' by the player towards the end of his tenure at the club.

Schmeichel: I find it a little bit annoying, disgusting in a way, that this is even an issue.

This is somebody who has given nearly 20 years for Liverpool Football Club. He has won every trophy that they played for his in his time. He should be welcomed back as a hero.

Even to have the idea that he would have a bad reception, I think that's bad.

Carragher: I don't agree with what you've said there. I think the supporters decide what type of reception he gets.

I think the reason why the reception will be poor tonight, is because Trent throughout those 20 years (at the club) has played the position 'I'm a supporter on the pitch'.

Those supporters in this stadium wouldn't leave Liverpool on a free to go and play for Real Madrid...

What he said since he got in the team, if that were to be true and Liverpool is the only tram for him, he wants to be a captain and legend here, you don't leave when you just won the league title and have an opportunity to go and win more trophies with your club...

I totally understand the reaction of the supporters. A lot of it is that they feel they have been hoodwinked by Trent throughout the process of him being at the club and also in the last year, where he he hasn't done any media interviews and not got involved in anything.

Carragher certainly articulated the view of many Liverpool supporters here, who felt let down by Trent Alexander-Arnold's decision to move to Real Madrid, as well as his overall conduct in his final months at Anfield.

In any case, he was always going to be met with a frosty reception ahead of this particular fixture.
