In six ODIs played so far for the English team, the CSK all-rounder has picked up seven wickets in addition to scoring 82 runs with the bat.

Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Jamie Overton on Saturday, September 6, was included in England’s playing XI for the third and final ODI of the ongoing series against South Africa. The final match of the bilateral series is scheduled to take place at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Sunday, September 7. The fixture will start at 3:30 PM IST.

The visitors have already secured the series by getting the better of the English team in the first two matches played at Headingley in Leeds and at Lord’s in London on September 2 and 4, respectively.

In the third ODI, England would like to secure a consolation win and avoid the embarrassment of suffering a whitewash against the Proteas.

Overton, who last played an ODI match for England on May 29, 2025, against the West Indies at Edgbaston in Birmingham, has replaced Saqib Mahmood in the playing XI. Mahmood played in the second ODI at Lord’s in place of Sonny Baker but was not able to take any wickets in his quota of 10 overs and conceded 53 runs.

The inclusion of Overton, who has picked up 7 wickets and scored 82 runs in six ODI matches played so far, will add strength to England’s batting unit, apart from his contributions with the ball.

Jamie Overton’s record in ODIs

England’s playing XI for 3rd ODI: Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid

In the third ODI, South African batter Matthew Breetzke will have a chance to become the fastest batter in the world to score 500 runs in ODIs.

As of now, Breetzke has 463 runs to his credit in five matches.

He needs to score at least 37 runs in Southampton to break Janneman Malan’s world record. Malan, who also represents South Africa, crossed the 500-run mark in his seventh ODI for the Proteas.
