Newcastle star Anthony Gordon to MISS Carabao Cup final vs Liverpool after red card

Newcastle star Anthony Gordon looks set to miss the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool after being sent off in Sunday's FA Cup match against Brighton.

The England international raised his arm as he tussled with Jan Paul van Hecke, shortly after being denied a penalty. Referee Anthony Taylor showed Gordon a straight red card, and VAR saw no reason to overturn the decision.

Unless Eddie Howe's side succeed with an appeal, it will be the second time in a row that they have gone into the Carabao Cup final without a key man. Back in 2023, goalkeeper Nick Pope was dismissed in a league game against Liverpool and missed the final against Manchester United.

Gordon wasn't the only player shown a red card in the match at St James' Park. Brighton full-back Tariq Lamptey picked up a second booking in the closing stages of the match to get his marching orders.

"Anthony Gordon has gone over the top of Jan Paul van Hecke," pundit and former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson said on BBC Radio 5 Live. "Gordon knows he cannot get there and he has run into Van Hecke with two hands. It looked like frustration to me. He has pushed the Brighton defender with force.

"Petulance. That's all it was. Gordon felt hard done by that he didn't get the early penalty. That motion is what the referee has seen. It is stupid from Anthony Gordon."

Newcastle went ahead in the match through Alexander Isak's penalty, only for Yankuba Minteh - who had earlier conceded the spot-kick - to equalise with a deflected effort. Fabian Schar thought he had snatched a late winner, only to be ruled offside, with Brighton eventually claiming an extra-time win through Danny Welbeck.

Gordon played a big part in getting Newcastle to the Carabao Cup final. He scored in both legs of the semi-final victory over Arsenal, with Newcastle claiming a 4-0 aggregate win to set up their Wembley meeting with Liverpool.

"I have been involved in some great moments with the club, in the Champions League where we have won big games here [at St James' Park], but that game was probably my best moment so far," Gordon told BBC Radio 5 Live after the second leg of the semi. "It was probably the biggest game of my career so far, a semi-final, and it will be my first club appearance at Wembley. I'm so excited.

"I live for those moments and these games, it is where I am at my best, when there is the most pressure." Jacob Murphy was Newcastle's other scorer in that game, and he could be the man who replaces the suspended Gordon at Wembley.
