‘Tell that to Real Madrid’ - Javier Tebas talks possible Clasico guard of honor for Barcelona

La Liga president Javier Tebas has been asked about the possibility of Real Madrid giving Barcelona a guard of honor at Camp Nou when the two teams meet next month.

Barca could seal the title before the game if they beat Osasuna this weekend and Madrid fail to win against Espanyol.

There’s already been speculation that Madrid don’t really want to perform the traditional tribute, but Tebas says he would like to see the custom upheld.

”You have to tell that to Real Madrid. The regulations don’t mention a guard of honor policy; it’s a custom or tradition, and the continuity of customs and traditions depends on the clubs,” he said, per Mundo Deportivo.

“There’s no rule that establishes it, but I insist, custom and tradition dictate that a guard of honor should be given to the champion, but it has to be decided by the players and the club, Real Madrid. But hey, they’re not champions yet. You’re saying that too soon.”

Tebas also hit out at Real Madrid for their recent decision to sue La Liga over their protocol against discrimination, harassment, and violence in football.

“Nothing Real Madrid does surprises me,” he added. “They’re suing for this, and they’ll probably sue for something else.

“Real Madrid doesn’t like anything that involves coordinated action by LaLiga teams as a whole; it’s not their way of understanding professional football, and well, it doesn’t surprise me.”
