Ange Postecoglou says the next Harry Kane who Liverpool and Chelsea want to sign is a 'real top striker'

Liverpool and Chelsea are two teams that look like they would reach the next level if they signed a brand-new striker.

While Arne Slot’s Reds side have managed to score goals for fun and dominate proceedings in the Premier League and Champions League this season, they have been able to rely on Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo to put the ball in the back of the net.

But with Darwin Nunez expected to leave Liverpool, who has been a disappointment since his move to Anfield anyway, the Merseyside-based club perhaps need a new number nine in the summer.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are discontent with Nicolas Jackson and it seems like they are ready to upgrade on the former Villareal forward.

Chelsea were interested in Liam Delap in January and perhaps if they had signed him, their season would not have gone off the rails like it has in recent weeks.

However, Liverpool have discussed signing Delap themselves.

Ange Postecoglou says Liverpool and Chelsea target Liam Delap is a “real top striker”

Liam Delap has become the talk of the town this season as one of the breakthrough stars at Ipswich Town.

Delap has been likened to Harry Kane as much like the Bayern Munich striker, he too is a clinical finisher, has an impressive all-round game and is a physical presence up top.

The former Manchester City striker, who started for Ipswich in their 4-1 defeat against Tottenham earned praise from Ange Postecoglou, who hailed Archie Gray for battling well against him.

Postecoglou said via Football.London: “Yeah, that’s the beauty of Arch. Like I said during the week, we know he’s playing out of position, we know we’re throwing him challenges. Delap’s a handful for anybody in this league. First few minutes, he caused him some problems. But I love that Arch takes on that challenge. He doesn’t shy away from it, he doesn’t hide. He just keeps going.”

“As I said, we’ll get enormous growth out of him during this period. But right now he’s contributing to us, he’s helping us. I thought we had to do some defensive work today, not a lot, but the defensive work we had to do was important. Against, like I said, a real top striker. I thought he handled it well.”

Ange Postecoglou’s verdict could well further convince Liverpool and Chelsea that Delap is the real deal for them.

Even Pep Guardiola lauded Delap despite Manchester City’s 6-0 walloping of Ipswich Town.

Liam Delap “intrigued” by Chelsea transfer

Interestingly, Delap is “intrigued” by a move to Chelsea.

Journalist Ben Jacobs said: If Arsenal get Sesko, Chelsea then likely would move for Liam Delap. And then we wait and see whether Manchester United, who also appreciate Delap, can influence that situation. Of course, Manchester United fans being greedy and not thinking about finances will say, we’ll just get Victor Gyokeres because Ruben Amorim likes him, but that’s a 70 million outlay.”

“And Delap, I think, is also quite intrigued by the Chelsea project, especially knowing that if he’s the number nine that comes in, he may stand a very strong chance of supplanting or at least competing with Nicolas Jackson, who, we must stress, Chelsea do still have big faith in. So Chelsea and Delap is one to watch.”

However, if Liverpool do ramp up their interest in Delap, they will have an advantage over Chelsea.

Unlike Enzo Maresca’s side, they can guarantee Champions League football next season.

Furthermore, Liverpool could win multiple trophies, unlike Chelsea, which could change Delap’s mind.
