Manchester United player Ruben Amorim let go suffers new transfer setback

Manchester United head coach oversaw an overhaul of the first team squad at the end of last season and during the summer transfer window

Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has been told that a move to join his old international manager Kasper Hjulmand at Bayer Leverkusen is currently unlikely.

Eriksen arrived at United on a free transfer in 2022 and spent three years at the club before his contract expired. Ruben Amorim had the option to extend the Dane's deal beyond last season but chose to allow the midfielder to leave the club on a free.

Since then, fans of Eriksen have been waiting to see where he moves to next. However, the summer did not yield a fresh challenge for the Danish legend.

Championship club Wrexham were believed to have offered Eriksen a contract but this was turned down by the ex-United man. Currently, he is training in Sweden with Malmo but without playing regular competitive football, the midfielder missed out on Brian Riemer's squad for the September international break.

Coincidentally, Eriksen's former international coach Hjulmand has returned to the dugout this week after being appointed Erik ten Hag's replacement in the Bundesliga. The midfielder's close relationship with the 53-year-old has led to speculation that a free transfer could be completed.

However, BILD understands that Leverkusen are unlikely to sign the midfielder as their squad is already full for the first half of the season. Eriksen would be able to join them now due to being a free agent but there is an unwillingness to sign him when there is not a place available for him in the team.

Despite this, Hjulmand was quizzed by BILD on the prospect of signing his fellow countryman in the future. The manager responded: "I don't talk about players like that; that's something I discussed with Simon Rolfes (Bayer's sporting director).

"Christian is a fantastic player and an even greater personality. We have a fantastic team and great players here."
