Former West Coast Eagles player becomes first openly bisexual AFL player

Former West Coast player Mitch Brown has spoken about “the very weird feeling of knowing this is out in the world” – after coming out as the first openly bisexual male player in the AFL’s 129-year history.

“If this helps even one person it will have been worth it,” he said in a statement on his Instagram.

“This isn’t about me. The world needs more positive male role models and I hope I can step up and be one.”

In an interview with the Daily Aus published on Wednesday morning, Brown – who played 94 games for the Eagles – described a culture of “hypermasculinity” during his football career that made questioning his sexuality impossible.
