India's Rishabh Pant suffered a finger injury during the Lord's Test. If he can't take the field again, can his replacement Dhruv Jurel bat in the Test, too?

India have suffered a potentially major blow with star wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant picking up a finger injury during the first day of the Lord’s Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

The vice-captain was hit on the tip of his left index finger while diving down the leg side, trying to stop a wide ball from Jasprit Bumrah in the 34th over. He looked in pain, receiving treatment from the physio on the field for a few minutes. He resumed duties briefly but walked out two overs later, wincing.

Substitute wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel had to change and gear up quickly to replace him behind the stumps.

“Update: #TeamIndia vice-captain Rishabh Pant got hit on his left index finger. He is receiving treatment at the moment and is under the supervision of the medical team. Dhruv Jurel is currently keeping wickets in Rishabh’s absence," BCCI issues an official update via social media.

As Pant was seen receiving further treatment on the sidelines during the rest of the day, Jurel was excellent behind the stumps. The Rajasthan Royals man was not as talkative and motivating but took a brilliant reflex catch off Ollie Pope on Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling in the 50th over to get India a big breakthrough.

Nitish Kumar Reddy, who took two wickets in the day as England went to Stumps at 251/4, was asked for an update on Pant’s injury in the press conference, but didn’t have any.

“To be honest, I just came off the field and I don’t know anything about it," Reddy said. “I haven’t heard anything, but we will hear more tomorrow morning before we go back."

It’s unclear whether Pant will be able to keep wickets or bat further at Lord’s. While Jurel can sub-in for him for the remainder of the Test with the gloves, the sport’s laws don’t allow him to bat as well.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)’s law 24.1.2 states: “A substitute shall not bowl or act as captain but may act as wicket-keeper only with the consent of the umpires."

Substitutes can only bat/bowl in case of a concussion to a playing 11 member. So, if Pant is unable to take the field again, India will have to play the rest of this Test a batter short.
