MANILA – Philippine Tennis Academy players Arriana Reign Maglana and Louraine Jallorina topped their respective categories in the Juntaphil Cup at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center over the weekend.

Maglana, a native of Maragusan town in Davao de Oro, claimed the U14 crown after pulling off a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Vania Parawan in the final.

Maglana teamed up with Jallorina to capture the U18 doubles title over Maria Isabel Ataiza and Avegail Joy Ansay, 6-1, 6-2.

"I am happy and it's very fulfilling to win in singles and doubles. I really prepared for this, especially since the opponents were also strong. I’m proud that I was able to show my game and uphold the trust of the coach and the team. It was worth all the training, effort, and sacrifice. This is just the start of our real tennis journey. There is more to come, and I will work even harder," the 13-year-old Maglana said in an interview on Monday.

Maglana, a Grade 8 student at Seibo College Foundation, Inc., bagged the U14 doubles title with Cyrel Mae Sanchez in the Masters Top 8 tournament last January.

They prevailed over Maristella Torrecampo and Izabelle Camcam, 8-4; Mitch Cruspero and Ataiza, 7 (7-1); and Ayl Gonzaga and Jasmine Sardona, 8-4.

Meanwhile, Jallorina displayed her awesome form in the U16 singles final to conquer Chiara Mae Bate, 6-2, 6-1.

"I’m very thankful for the results of my matches in both singles and doubles. I really prepared for this tournament so it feels amazing to see all the hard work and sacrifices paid off," the 14-year-old from Iloilo City said.

"In singles, I had to stay focused and composed, while in doubles, teamwork and communication with my partner were really important. Winning both events is a big achievement for me, and it motivates me even more to keep training and improving for future tournaments. I’d also like to thank God for giving me strength and guidance throughout, and to the PTA for their continuous support it really means a lot in my journey as an athlete," added the Grade 9 student at De La Salle Santiago Zobel in Alabang.

Jallorina bagged the mixed doubles bronze medal at the 2023 Batang Pinoy National Championships in Manila.

PTA head coach Bobie Angelo, a former Davis Cupper and SEA Games medalist, sees a lot of promise from Maglana and Jallorina.

"These young girls really train hard and the results at Juntaphil Cup showed they have the potential to become better players, I'm sure about that. They are hardworking and I can see their hungry spirit," Angelo said in an online interview as he currently with Tennielle Madis at the J300 ITF Nonthaburi in Thailand.

The PTA, founded by long-time sports patron Romy Chan, has produced 2023 Metro Manila Open champion Arthur Craig Pantino and 2017 PCA Open champion John Bryan Otico.

Other Juntaphil Cup winners were Jan Caleb Villeno (boys U12), Marcus Lorenzo (boys U14), Anirudh Palanisamy (boys U16), Al-Zayeed Baid (boys U18), Evan Bacalso (boys U21), Ella Mae Paglaluan (girls U12), and Marielle Alexi Jarata (girls U18). (PNA)
