Match Preview

Time has somehow flown by and just over 50 days since Everton closed out their 2024/25 season with a win away at Newcastle, they are here tonight starting off the 2025/26 season.

The first game is a preseason friendly away at Accrington Stanley with the Blues still in the process of filling in some gaping holes in the squad following the departure of nearly a dozen players over the summer with expiring contracts and loans.

David Moyes has presided over the signings of Carlos Alcaraz, Thierno Barry and from earlier today, Mark Travers. However, the need for a right winger as well as additional cover for fullbacks and midfielders remains.

A couple of players have only just returned to the training fold following extended summer holidays and are unlikely to play tonight - Jordan Pickford, Idrissa Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye.

Tonight’s opponents Accrington Stanley finished in 21st in the EFL League Two last season, narrowly surviving the drop. The original town club, Accrington, was amongst the twelve founder members of the Football League in 1888, before the club folded a few years later with neighbouring club Stanley Villa taking the name to become Accrington Stanley.
