Little did Christian Eriksen think that he would find himself in a Bundesliga relegation battle after signing for Wolfsburg earlier this season.

Christian Eriksen made 107 appearances for Manchester United after spending three years at the club.

Despite spending seven years at Tottenham, Eriksen had to wait to move to Old Trafford to win his first trophy in English football. He went on to win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup under Erik ten Hag.

Eriksen became a free agent after leaving United and eventually signed a deal with Wolfsburg, but things are not going to plan at the German club.

Eriksen’s contract expired at United at the end of last season, which means he knows how bad things can get at a big club.

United finished 15th in the Premier League and lost to Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final.

This led to Eriksen joining Wolfsburg in a Bosman deal.

In joining Wolfsburg, Eriksen saw a club that were crowned German champions in 2008/09, DFB Cup winners in 2014/15, and regular participants in European competitions.

On top of that, Wolfsburg have one of the most expensive squads in the Bundesliga, but they find themselves deep in the relegation battle.

After losing 4-0 at VfB Wolfsburg at the weekend, Daniel Bauer’s side are placed second-last in the table.

Eriksen has made 22 appearances for Wolfsburg this season, scoring one goal and registering five assists.

The 34-year-old is a key starter in the midst of trouble at Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg haven’t been relegated since first earning promotion to the Bundesliga in 1997.

That makes Wolfsburg one of the few clubs in the German top flight that has maintained its status for nearly three decades without experiencing relegation.

The closest Wolfsburg came to relegation was in 2016/17 and 2017/18, when they finished 16th and were required to play relegation play-offs in both seasons.

What has Christian Eriksen said about Wolfsburg’s relegation fears?

Eriksen has experienced a lot in his career.

After coming through at Ajax, the Dane made a name for himself in the Premier League at Tottenham. He later played for Inter Milan, Brentford, United and now Wolfsburg.

“I’ve actually mostly been ‘on the other side’,” Eriksen told Kicker, as quoted by Tipsbladet.

“In many of the clubs I’ve played for, it’s been about finishing in the top 10. Brentford was perhaps an exception. And in Wolfsburg, it’s actually the first time I’ve been in a relegation battle.

“But that’s football. In the end, it’s an experience that comes with it, says the Danish national team player.”
